By #2030, urban areas will host 60% of the population, with many residents under 18. Experts stress the need for youth involvement in #urban #decisionmaking to foster #sustainabledevelopment. #WorldCitiesDay2024, themed "Youth climate changemakers: Catalyzing local action for urban sustainability," underscores youth-led innovation in tackling urban climate issues. Initiatives like the "Pact for the Future" and the "Declaration on Future Generations" emphasize including young voices in #globalpolicy, aiming to create #inclusive, resilient cities that meet all residents' needs. On 31 October 2024, the #GlobalObservance of World Cities Day, will be under the theme #Youth leading #climate and #localaction for #cities. Young people advocate for bolder steps and actions to tackle #climatecrisis in our cities. Currently, hundreds of millions of people, particularly in vulnerable communities, face increasing risks from flooding events. These #floods can have severe consequences, including contamination of water sources, spread of waterborne diseases, significant economic disruption, and property damage from water, debris, and sediment. Most critically, flooding events continue to endanger human lives across the globe. The causes and impacts of #urbanflooding are evolving rapidly. Urban development pressures have led to expansion into flood-prone areas, both riverine and coastal, often in violation of zoning regulations and disrupting natural drainage patterns. This situation is further exacerbated by rapid urbanization, population growth, and the impacts of climate change. These combined factors are not only altering flood patterns but also amplifying their negative impacts on communities. Building #urbanresilience against flooding requires strategic investment in flood protection infrastructure, with a particular focus on safeguarding vulnerable populations. It is essential to protect critical infrastructure and implement preventive measures to minimize impacts on #publichealth and #localeconomies. In response to these challenges, municipalities and governments globally are adopting innovative approaches, integrated flood management strategies, and sustainable investment in resilient #infrastructure. The seventh Cities on the Frontline session of 2024, a collaborative effort between the Resilient Cities Network and the World Bank's Cities Resilience Program, will address these critical issues. The session will showcase data and modeling tools for flood risk assessment, examine the relationship between flooding and socioeconomic vulnerability, and present valuable case studies from Austria and Tanzania on scalable, cost-effective flood prevention strategies." These #circular shapes conjure images of water ripples, stones polished by time and tides, and the rhythmic cycles of the sea. Their curves symbolize infinity, life’s cyclical flow, and the interconnectedness of all things—concepts deeply rooted in the coastal setting. Glass, a material rich in #symbolism, embodies a delicate balance—both #solid and #fragile, #transparent yet #reflective. In this #coastal installation, its qualities are magnified. The glass frames the surrounding #landscape, offering glimpses of both the art and the environment through its fluid curves. Its #transparency mirrors the sea itself—revealing depth while maintaining an aura of mystery. The material choice speaks to a tension between #permanence and #impermanence. Like nature, glass can #endure but remains #vulnerable to external forces. This delicate #balance reminds us of our own relationship with the #environment, #resilient yet subject to forces beyond control. One of the most mesmerizing aspects of this installation is its dynamic relationship with #light. By day, sunlight filters through the transparent surfaces, casting ever-changing #shadows and #reflections. As dusk falls, artificial lighting animates the installation, casting a soft, ethereal glow from within.
