Zweig studied in Austria, France, and Germany before settling in Salzburg in 1913. In 1934, driven into exile by the Nazis, he emigrated to England and then, in 1940, to Brazil by way of New York. Zweig's interest in psychology and the teachings of Sigmund Freud led to his most characteristic work, the subtle portrayal of character. All that we see or seem
Is but a dream within a dream.

Die Frau und die Landschaft (subtitled Eine erotische Erzählung , translated into English as A Girl and the Weather), first published in 1922, unfurls in a characteristic Zweig setting of a Tyroler hotel and focusses on the distress of a nameless hotel guest who feels tormented by the lingering summer heat and awaits the redemptive downpour. In this sultry and febrile atmosphere, contemplating the drought affecting the earth, the trees, the flowers, he spots a young woman, residing in the hotel with her parents. Pale, frail and mysterious, dressed in ghostly white, like the landscape she seems to wither in the heat and thirsts for the rain to come. Sensing in her a kindred soul with a similar expectation and yearning, the narrator feels drawn to her, longing for intimacy. At night, a somnambulistic, almost hallucinatory encounter follows when the narrator finds the young woman in his room.

Drinking in each other like the gasping earth would welcome the rain, psycho-erotic parallels are drawn between human sexual desire and nature’s craving for life-giving water, painted in intense and sensual (not always that subtle) imagery (the unloading of tension when the tempest finally breaks loose, conveyed as a voluptuous struggle and wedding of the sky and the earth).
The young woman however not openly lusts after the narrator, but seems to approach him in a rather delirious state, making the narrator doubt if she is actually aware of her desire (which left me wondering what kept Zweig from depicting a woman’s desire less desultory, if he in the context of the story thought it something which could not (yet) stand the light of day or rather improbable - and how to read the narrator’s response to the woman’s bouts of deathlike stillness, eliciting thoughts on Ophelia drifting on the waters ‘the numb face rising palely from the dark flood’, or of the woman as a Greek stone mask). Zweig seems to suggest he considers Nature an impassioned, partly conscious creature in itself. As in this tale Nature and Woman appear to be one, Woman incarnating Nature is a source for meditative Traumbilder and longing, which gives the story a Symbolist flavour.
The mutual sensitivity and empathy between human being and nature, and nature featuring as a mirror reflecting human moods reminded me of Richard Wagner’s languorous Lied Im Treibhaus (In the Hothouse), the poem by Mathilde Wesendonck that Wagner set to music as a study for Tristan und Isolde.

Silently you incline your branches,
Tracing signs in the air,
And, mute witness to your sorrows,
A sweet perfume rises.
Wide, in longing and desire,

And embrace, in self-deception,
Barren emptiness, a fearful void.
WeIl I know it, poor plant!
We share the same fate.
Although the light shines brightly round us,
Our home is not here!
And, as the sun gladly quits
The empty brightness of the day,
So he, who truly suffers,

Visually and sensuously overwhelming, Zweig’s style in this tale struck me as slightly more exalted then in the other stories I read by him. Nevertheless his sumptuous style evokes masterly the suffocating weight of the torrid heat, the lassitude of the land and the guests, the anxious and desperate longing for release of the narrator and the woman. While not reaching the psychological depth of Twenty-Four Hours in the Life of a Woman, Burning secret, Buchmendel - which explore a broader range of emotions – A Girl and the Weather still presents a captivating descend into desire.
If the passivity and mental state of the young woman in this oneiric nocturne might come across as slightly disturbing transposed to the present context, one can bear in mind we are in the realm of dreams and the subconscious; when reading Zweig, we can fairly confidently assume his friend Freud is never far away. By associating a woman with nature, depicting her as a creature ‘no longer a woman, no human being, but night itself’ and faintly demonic, Zweig seems to treasure the traditional man/culture versus woman/nature dichotomy – not exactly a trailblazing literary trope. More wicked minds might even scent a whiff of certain ingrained views on and discussions about women, recalling the slanted way in which the 1595 Disputatio nova contra mulieres, qua probatur eas Homines non esse (A new disputation against women, in which it is demonstrated that they are not human beings) was later read.
Allmählich ward mirs, als sei es keine Frau mehr, kein Mensch, der hier abenteuerlich sich mir genaht, sondern die Nacht selbst, das Geheimnis der lechzenden, gequälten Natur, das sich mir aufgetan. Stefan Zweig es de aquellos escritores únicos y privilegiados de los que es francamente difícil encontrar un título malo y puede que ni tan siquiera mediocre. Su obra es reconocida sobre todo por el retrato psicológico y emocional de sus personajes, sin duda su punto fuerte, además de estar integrados en historias que mantienen la atención hasta el final por el interés que suscitan las vivencias de aquéllos.
La prosa de Zweig es hipnótica e intensa, con un toque de suspense, y es fácil que llegue al lector porque cuenta cosas que le interesan, como puedan ser el amor, la amistad, la familia, las obligaciones de la vida, todo ello a través de palabras sencillas y lúcidas, al mismo tiempo que poéticas. Es fácil identificarse con unos personajes a los que llegas a comprender en cierta manera, porque Zweig te hace creer que son reales. Así que haces tuyas sus tristezas y alegrías, y esto es verdaderamente difícil de conseguir.
Estos son los seis relatos contenidos en ‘La mujer y el paisaje’:
Obligación impuesta, donde Ferdinand, el protagonista, vive con su mujer Paula en Suiza, ejerciendo como artista, hasta que recibe, porque sabe que tarde o temprano tenía que llegar, una carta que truncará su vida. Gran relato, que consigue que te preguntes qué harías tú en el lugar de Ferdinand. Yo lo tengo claro.
La mujer y el paisaje, relato a flor de piel, donde una sequía y posterior lluvia, desencadenan las pasiones de dos huéspedes de un hotel del Tirol. Buen relato, donde destacan las descripciones.
Declive de un corazón, donde un hombre mayor descubre de la peor manera la realidad de su familia, un hombre que empezó desde lo más bajo hasta crear una fortuna. Extraordinario el trabajo de Zweig retratando los pensamientos y sentimientos de este hombre.
Resistencia de la realidad, donde sabemos al principio que un hombre y una mujer por fin se vuelven a ver después de nueve años, pasando a conocer después, a través de los recuerdos del protagonista, cómo empezó todo hasta llegar al presente. Relato entretenido, donde el interés radica en saber cómo acabará el asunto.
Descubrimiento inesperado de un oficio, donde el protagonista nos da a conocer su afición a observar el mundo que le rodea, en este caso París, y en concreto le llama la atención cierto individuo con chaquetilla color canario que está entre el gentío y que actúa de una manera bastante curiosa. Excepcional de principio a fin.
Wondrak (fragmento), donde Ruzema, apodada cruelmente la Calavera por un defecto físico, ha de enfrentarse a vejaciones sin nombre, hasta que el cura del pueblo le encuentra un hogar y un trabajo apartados en el bosque. Ruzema tendrá un hijo y con él la felicidad, un hijo al que protegerá a toda costa. Zweig nos ofrece el peor retrato del ser humano en un triste relato.
Sin duda, hay que leer a Stefan Zweig. Nunca defrauda.

De nuevo, un conjunto de historias cortas de Zweig donde predominan los sentimientos súbitos en las distintas circunstancias que ocurren entre hombres y mujeres, bien sean amantes o padres e hijos, en situaciones de fuerte tono realista marcadas por el apego y la nostalgia. Incluye seis relatos, uno de ellos incompleto.
Comento los que más me han llamado la atención:
- "Obligación impuesta": un hombre recibe una temida carta, donde le requieren para el servicio militar. Su decisión se debate entre cumplir con su deber de ciudadano o rebelarse para quedarse con su esposa, quien adquiere una fuerte convicción ante lo que ocurre.
- "Resistencia de la realidad": posiblemente el mejor relato de todos, muestra a un hombre que vuelve nueve años después a la casa donde comenzó su trabajo como secretario, la misma casa donde quedaron enterradas las chispas de un adulterio no consumado.
- "Descubrimiento inesperado de un oficio": un hombre observa con atención los extraños andares de un curioso viandante, hasta darse cuenta de que le está analizando en plena acción de su oficio.
- "Wondrak": historia incompleta, donde una mujer repudiada por todo el pueblo encuentra una fuente de satisfacción insospechada al cuidar de su hijo.

Meh. The first story I would actually characterize as super boring; it also features another weird female character with a heavy emphasis on her virginity and whiteness and pureness; also featured fishy consent. Welp!

Dans ce monde déclinant où se fanaient les fleurs, où dépérissait le feuillage et où tarissaient les rivières, toute vie intérieure finissait par mourir et les heures coulaient oisives et paresseuses.
Une nouvelle de Stefan Zweig publiée en 1935. L'histoire tourne autour d'une jeune femme qui se retrouve avec un homme pendant un été très chaud. Des sentiments d'amour et une sensualité prennent place.
Une jolie petite histoire bien écrite par un auteur que j'admire beaucoup.

Eine kurze Episode in den Tiroler Alpen - ein Nachmittag, eine Nacht, ein Morgen danach.
Die Hitze und Schwüle kann man förmlich spüren, so schön hat es wieder Zweig in Worte gefasst (siehe meine Lieblingsstelle).
Lieblingsstelle:
"Frühmorgens schon starrte die Sonne gelb und stumpf wie das Auge eines Fiebernden vom leeren Himmel auf die erloschene Landschaft, und mit den steigenden Stunden quoll dann mählich ein weißlicher drückender Dampf aus dem messingenen Kessel des Mittags und überschwülte das Tal. Irgendwo freilich in der Ferne hoben sich die Dolomiten mächtig auf, und Schnee glänzte von ihnen, rein und klar, aber nur das Auge fühlte erinnernd diesen Schimmer der Kühle, und es tat weh, sie schmachtend anzusehen und an den Wind zu denken, der sie vielleicht zur gleichen Stunde rauschend umflog, indes hier im Talkessel eine gierige Wärme nachts und tags sich zudrängte und mit tausend Lippen einem die Feuchte entsog."

Algo me dice que si no fuera por la prosa de Zweig no me hubiesen gustado tanto estos relatos. Ya me doy cuenta de que este autor era único a la hora de describir emociones en tan sólo 4 líneas y que tú las sientas de forma tan visceral.

Los bochornos de un verano interminable, donde no sucede la lluvia. Una noche, donde la ansiedad por terminar con el la fiebre del estío se ve reflejada en la aproximación de una mujer.
Las descripciones ante la sofocación veraniega son excelsas, el sentimiento de un hombre que se confunde con el mundo por la necesidad de unas gotas de agua, una noche con aires cálidos que mueven a la naturaleza y al hombre.
Stefan Zweig es uno de los máximos escritores del siglo pasado, no me canso de leerlo.

Καθώς το διάβαζα φανταζόμουν έναν ηθοποιό, πάνω στη σκηνή σε μονολογο, να αναπαριστά τα συναισθήματα που χώρεσε ο Τσβαιχ σε μόλις 70 σελίδες.
Τον φαντάζομαι να μιλά εντονα και γρήγορα σε κρεσέντο τόνο και ξαφνικά όλα γύρω του να μπαίνουν σε slow motion γιατί συνάντησε αυτή που ενσαρκώνει τη φύση μαζί με κάθε μορφή ηδονής, κάθε πρότυπο ομορφιάς και υπερβαίνει κάθε κοινότυπο.
Ο αφηγητής βρισκεται σε συναισθηματικό παροξυσμό από τη πνιγηρή ζεστη και αντιλαμβάνεται την φύση σαν μια γυναίκα, εξιδανικευμένη φιγούρα, απρόσιτη και αενάως επιθυμητή. Της δίνει τα ανθρώπινα χαρακτηριστικά μιας άγνωστης και αινιγματικής κοπέλας και ερωτοτροπεί μαζί της.
Ο αφηγητής, απολυτρωμένος μέσα από τη μεταφυσική, τρόπον τινά, συνεύρεση με τα στοιχεία της φύσης, αποκτά συνείδηση της υπόστασής του και απορροφάται από το τοπίο.
Στο κειμενο αναπλάθεται περίτεχνα ένα παλιό μοτίβο ενσάρκωσης του τοπίου που συναντάμε στον Ρομαντισμό. Η περιγραφή είναι γλαφυρή και κατακλυσμιαία. Κάθε σημείο της είναι απτό σε βαθμό υπερβατικό.

La mujer y el paisaje escrita por Stefan Zweig es una narrativa maravillosa que se adentra en los pensamientos mas profundos del ser humano, atrapándote desde la primera pagina con sus personajes abarrotados de una psicología fuertemente marcada por sus auténticas personalidades, hasta seducirte con su espectacular atmosfera cargada de brillantes descripciones, que se adentran por tus poros y te hace sentir el leve bochorno del clima. El libro está compuesto de seis diferentes relatos:
1-Obligación impuesta: Un pintor llamado Ferdinand es obligado a marchar para la guerra, pero su esposa Paula lucha con todas sus fuerzas para evitar que le arrebaten esta felicidad por una carta que le impone esta obligación.
2-La mujer y el paisaje: La sequía de un remoto pueblo hace estallar las pasiones desenfrenadamente de dos huéspedes en un pequeño hostal, mezclándose con la tempestad de una tormenta que se cierne sobre ellos.
3-Declive de un corazón: donde vemos la historia de un adinerado y humilde hombre que solo se desvive por su esposa e hija, pero solo recibe rechazo de ellas hasta cuestionarse el sentido de su existencia.
4-Resistencia de la realidad: Aquí vemos como la historia se desarrolla en tiempos desordenados donde dos amantes se vuelven a encontrar y reviven pasiones y deseos reprimidos por tantos años... 5-Descubrimiento inesperado de un oficio: El protagonista tiene una afición de seguir a las personas con las que se cruza por las calles y estudiar sus comportamientos hasta descubrir sus mayores secretos.
6-Wondrak: Ruzena, con la nariz aplastada y el cuerpo deformado, es criticada y burlada por la gente de su pueblo, apodándola "la calavera" aquí veremos un personaje donde el escritor no tuvo el más mínimo pudor en hacerle sufrir hasta la última página.

"No tengo más patria que la humanidad"
Algunas historias me tenían pegada al libro mientras que otras hacían que deseara que se acabara de una vez, pero en general el estilo del autor es intenso y lleno de sentimientos fuertes como el desespero, la amargura, la rabia y en ocasiones el miedo. Es muy interesante como este autor plantea la guerra desde distintos países y distintos personajes, y cómo cada uno de ellos refleja la voluntad de rechazo contra estos enfrentamientos que lo único que consiguen es destrozar familias y personas. El autor deja ciertas moralejas en cada una de sus historias, lo interesante es que uno llega a sentir que hace parte de aquel momento que cambia al personaje, cuando el protagonista aprende una lección parece que también me afecta personalmente y me invita a pensar sobre ello.

Zweig es siempre una grata sorpresa. Su pluma nunca decepciona. Cuando me decidí a leer este libro, lo hice inicialmente porque su título me sedujo. Al abrirlo, me di cuenta de que eran relatos cortos, hecho que me desanimó pues no soy muy fanática de este tipo de lecturas. Sin embargo, continué porque sabía que el autor es un genio. Y así fue. Relatos cortos que lo dicen todo, historias íntimas, cercanas, curiosas, hermosas... imposible no quedarse prendada de este escritor después de que se lee un primer libro.

Me ha gustado bastante. Los 6 relatos incluidos en el libro son muy buenos (Obligación impuesta, La mujer y el paisaje, Declive de un corazón, Resistencia a la realidad, Descubrimiento inesperado de un oficio y Wondrak).
Stefan Sweig se adentra en los deseos de sus protagonistas, lo que hace que la historia resulte más "íntima y emocional".
Sweig es un gran maestro de la prosa y se nota en este libro muy recomendado.

Colección de relatos de Zweig en los que abundan las descripciones y los conflictos morales. No he conectado, sin embargo, con las historías propuestas esta vez, cuando las más de las veces sí conecto con la sensibilidad del autor.
Me ha parecido magnífico, eso sí, el relato “Resistencia de la realidad”, donde Zweig vuelve a demostrar su maestría narrando pasiones o el carácter irrecuperable de éstas.

El primer cuento me ha parecido muy bueno, luego la forma de tratar el tema de la guerra y lo mal que lo pasa la gente me ha parecido poco original. Estilo perfecto, y esas cosas.

Ich glaube, ich werde von Stefan Zweig nie enttäuscht. Wieder bin ich nach dem Lesen dieser kurzen Novelle leise, nachdenklich und brauche eine Weile, um wieder in die Realität zu kommen.

De inicio a fin, cada uno de los cuentos de este compendio, han calmado a mi alma y la han hecho flotar; agradable, veraniego, suntuoso, hermoso y lleno de dolor, pesar, angustia y amor, esté libro me deja (como todo lo que él escribió) muy gratamente satisfecha.

Una de mis colecciones favoritas de Stefan Zweig. Creo que a lo largo de todos estos relatos cortos se puede apreciar perfectamente el estilo elegante, sensual y psicológico del autor. Cada relato distinto al anterior, en esta colección Zweig da más razones para considerar que es uno de los mejores autores del siglo XX.
