Recap stands for recapitulation. It’s an essential process that allows truck drivers to effectively manage and monitor their available driving hours to ensure compliance with regulations and avoid fatigue-related issues.

Under the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations in the United States, commercial truck drivers are subject to hours-of-service (HOS) rules, which dictate the maximum amount of time they can spend driving and on-duty within a specified period.

The recap process involves reviewing and calculating the driving hours that a driver has utilized and resetting their available hours after taking a required break or rest period. This allows drivers to determine how much time they have remaining within their daily and weekly limits.

To understand the recap process, let’s consider an example:

Suppose a truck driver starts their workday with a fresh set of driving hours. They might begin with 11 hours of maximum drive time within a 14-hour window. As they drive, their available hours decrease until they reach the 11-hour mark or the 14-hour window limit.

At this point, the driver must take a mandatory break or rest period, typically lasting a minimum of 10 consecutive hours. Once the break is completed, the recap process begins. The driver’s available hours are reset, and they can start their next shift with a fresh set of driving hours.

However, it is important to note that the recap process does not grant additional driving hours beyond the prescribed limits. It only resets the driver’s available hours to the maximum allowed by regulations after they have fulfilled the mandatory rest period.
