Ghana's Premier Technical University. 4th Best University in Ghana (Times Higher Education Sub-Saharan Africa Rankings, 2023).
On October 17, 2024, Accra Technical University (ATU) hosted a Cyber Security Symposium under the theme "Empowering the Next Generation Cyber Defenders: Building a Resilient Digital Future" at its University Auditorium. The event brought together experts to tackle critical issues such as cybercrime, data protection, and the growing need for cyber security education. In his keynote address, Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Amevi Acakpovi, reaffirmed ATU’s commitment to addressing cyber security threats in Ghana's rapidly evolving digital landscape. He emphasized the importance of strengthening public data protection and raising awareness about compliance with the Data Protection Act. Professor Acakpovi also advocated for integrating cybersecurity education into all academic disciplines to equip the next generation with the skills to safeguard digital infrastructure. Mr. Stephen Cudjoe-Seshie from the Cyber Security Authority (CSA) revealed that 36% of Ghanaians have experienced data breaches, highlighting a critical shortage of skilled cybersecurity professionals in Ghana. He outlined CSA’s efforts to bridge this gap by incorporating cybersecurity into the national education curriculum and offering targeted training programs. A panel of experts including Mr. George Babafemi, Fintech Consultant and Board Member, eTranzact Ghana Ltd, and Edward Danso Ansong, PhD, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Computer Science, University of Ghana, called for inclusivity in cybersecurity education, stressing the need for everyone, regardless of their profession, to understand the importance of data protection. ATU’s Director of ICT, Sylvester Hatsu (PhD), stressed the need to revise the university’s curriculum to offer short courses and professional certifications in cyber security. I stressed the essence for higher learning institutions to appoint Professors of Practice to incorporate industry expertise into the classroom to enrich the learning experience for students pursuing cyber-related programmes. The symposium, part of ATU’s National Cyber Security Awareness Month activities, was held in partnership with the CSA and supported by eTranzact Ghana Ltd, Digital Arena, Telligent (GH) Systems, and IMPROTECH SYSTEMS. #CyberSecurityAwareness #DataProtection #CyberSecurityEducation
