The Institute of Directors (IoD) Convention is always a huge team effort from everyone at Black Vanilla, from the PR team organising the media and press office, to the events team working tirelessly to make sure the event runs smoothly - and it was a success all round! We were delighted to welcome Tristan Claridge from the Institute for Social Capital this year to share his findings on the recent study in Guernsey. Some of the key takeaways that stood out were the unique nature of Guernsey’s social capital, characterised by strong interpersonal trust, community solidarity and a deep sense of belonging. This strong social fabric has played a critical role in maintaining a high quality of life and fostering a resilient society. However, the report also points to emerging challenges, including widening generational and socioeconomic divides, rising inequality, social isolation and declining trust in local institutions. If left unaddressed, these issues threaten to undermine the island’s social cohesion, leading to both social and economic stagnation. Fortunately, the report provides actionable recommendations to strengthen Guernsey’s social capital, such as fostering intergenerational dialogue, encouraging volunteerism, enhancing access to social spaces and ensuring transparency and responsiveness in local institutions. Our latest research on the strengths and weaknesses of social capital in Guernsey is now available! Guernsey has strong social capital characterised by high levels of interpersonal trust, community solidarity, and a profound sense of belonging among its residents. Yet, our research revealed several challenges and vulnerabilities that pose significant threats to the continued strength of Guernsey’s social capital. However, many participants were hopeful about Guernsey’s capacity to safeguard and even enhance its social capital. The island’s tradition of self-reliance and its demonstrated ability to adapt and reinvent itself provides a solid foundation for addressing emerging threats. Thanks to the IoD Guernsey Branch, this groundbreaking research has opened important conversations about the future of Guernsey's social capital and its connection to the island's economic growth and social wellbeing. What's new in social media? - Instagram is introducing enhanced controls for teenage users. For those under 18, key privacy settings will now be enabled by default, including making their accounts private, which restricts access to only their followers. - Threads follows Instagram's suit and now enables users to post carousels of 20 videos or photos. - YouTube is expanding its AI chatbot feature, enabling users to ask questions related to the video they are watching. AI update incoming 📲 The latest version of ChatGPT, known as GPT o1-, brings a significant leap forward in AI's reasoning capabilities - approaching the equivalent of human logical thinking. Now, when you prompt ChatGPT, it generates a response as usual, but before delivering it, the model pauses to reassess, essentially asking itself whether this is the most optimal answer for your request. It's an exciting development in AI, though a bit unsettling to realise that this technology now engages in its own internal "thought" process. To maximise its potential, try including a prompt like, "What are 5 clarifying questions you need answered to complete this task?" This ensures you're guiding the AI toward a more refined and useful outcome. #AI #ChatGPT
