The Pogues

About The Pogues

The Pogues were an Anglo-Irish Celtic punk band formed in 1982 in London, England and fronted by Shane McGowan. The band was known for pushing Celtic punk’s popularity into the mainstream, with a number of hit singles and albums.

From 1982 – 1984, the band went by the name Pogue Mahone, the anglicisation of the Irish Gaelic phrase “póg mo thóin,” meaning “kiss my arse.”
