Rory McIlroy saved $20,000 by apologizing after he threw his club into a lake

After a poor second shot during the WGC-Cadillac Championship in March, Rory McIlroy was so overcome with anger that he turned and threw his 3-iron into the lake.

It was a momentary outburst of the kind we see on tour occasionally, and after the round, Rory apologized. That gracious apology, unbeknownst to him at the time, ended up saving quite a bit of money.

According to The Guardian:

The PGA Tour does not reveal how much players are fined for such incidents but McIlroy said: “The fine was reduced from $25,000 to $5,000 because I said I was sorry on the TV interview afterwards.” …

“When you are in the middle of it you don’t realise because it’s what you do, and then you step back and get presented with numbers and you’re like ‘wow,’” McIlroy said.
