Royals designated hitter Billy Butler is built for power, not speed. He’s nicknamed “Country Breakfast,” and he has stolen only five bases in 1,166 regular-season games in his career. Entering Sunday’s ALDS Game 3 matchup against the Angels, Butler had played 397 games since his last steal on July 5, 2012.

So with Butler on first and lefty Hector Santiago on the mound in the bottom of the third, the Angels didn’t even bother holding Butler on. And Butler made them pay:

That’s what speed do?

You can sense shortstop Erick Aybar’s fear as the 240-pound Butler came rumbling into the bag. And Butler, who looked as surprised as anyone by his steal, celebrated in the same way some speedier teammates do:

The Royals led the Majors in stolen bases in the regular season and advanced to the ALDS after tying a postseason record by swiping seven bags in the Wild Card game. But Butler’s stolen base was too much for the Internet to handle.

And on and on like that. Baseball is astonishing.
