ICYMI: The New York Times reporter Alisha Haridasani Gupta recently highlighted how menopause affects women of color. Here are five things you should know: 1️⃣ For women of color, the perimenopause transition can look and feel different. For example, Asian women tend to experience chronic pain or anxiety, rather than hot flashes. Studies have found that Black women tend to start the transition earlier than women of other races; and the duration, frequency, and severity of normal menopausal symptoms can also vary. 2️⃣ A landmark study of racial discrepancies in menopause found that Black women were more likely than white women to report financial instability, instances of discrimination, trouble with police, experiences of violence, as well as illness or death of close family members. All of these factors contribute to weathering that negatively impacts health, aging, and the menopause experience. 3️⃣ There are only 1,500 physicians worldwide certified by the Menopause Society. With so few trained providers, nuanced factors related to race may get dismissed. This can result in feelings of dismissal for patients and stark consequences for patients with unmanaged symptoms. 4️⃣ In recent years, menopause-focused start-ups have raised awareness of menopause symptoms, but these efforts have largely appealed to white women who are often viewed as “the norm.” 5️⃣ We need more research of the long-term impact of these disparities, otherwise inadequacies between groups of women outside of the norm will continue. "Symptoms associated with the transition to menopause, which can last a decade, are often a drag on women’s careers and arise at a time when they may be stepping into larger executive roles. A study by the Mayo Clinic published this year found that 15 percent of women either missed work or cut back on hours because of menopause symptoms, and that loss of productivity costs women an estimated $1.8 billion each year." Despite the high cost and common experience of menopause, it has mostly been ignored in the workplace. That is starting to change as employers realize they can attract and retain women in the workforce by offering menopause-specific care in their benefit packages.
