Two weeks ago, we kicked off #ClimateWeekNYC with stakeholders across the industry. From confronting shared issues like supply chain decarbonisation to showcasing the potential of collective financing mechanisms, the week’s discussions explored how collaboration can accelerate progress. As Paul Polman, Co-Chair of The Fashion Pact, said: “Climate change is a human problem. It is a leadership problem. There is no business case for a burning planet.” The conversation has ended, now it’s time to collaborate and build scalable solutions. But how does this look in practice? Where are the opportunities for engagement? Our speakers noted several key points: Eva von Alvensleben, Secretary General and Executive Director of The Fashion Pact, called for industry-wide efforts to drive scalable impact: “Fashion’s progress on climate has relied on individual action in the past - but that can only get us so far. The challenge has risen, so we need to rise to meet it, and that means collective action.” Peter Charles, Global Head of Supply Chain at Tapestry, emphasised strong leadership: “Strategic alignment is crucial. Our CEO was clear that this would be a purpose-focused company, so our steer comes from the top.” Betsy Blaisdell, Director of Supply Chain Decarbonisation at Guidehouse highlighted the impact of collective financing: “Decarbonising supply chains will come at a cost. Brands need to budget for this and provide suppliers with the right support and incentives. Industry collaborations, like the Future Supplier Initiative, are a great place to start.” The #FutureSupplierInitiative, facilitated by The Fashion Pact in partnership with Apparel Impact Institute, Guidehouse, and DBS Bank, helps overcome financial barriers suppliers face transitioning to renewable energy by offering financial incentives and technical support. As Kristina Elinder Liljas, Senior Director of Sustainable Finance and Engagement at Apparel Impact Institute pointed out, “We need a positive outlook, and patient profit.” Another key initiative, the #UnlockProgramme, developed by The Fashion Pact and sustainability consultancy 2050.cloud, aims to decarbonise cotton production. Recent results from the pilot phase demonstrated the potential to catalyse the shift to regenerative farming practices. Laila Petrie, Founder of 2050.cloud and Director General of Future Earth Lab.org, which will now house Unlock, spoke on embracing discomfort to drive change: “True innovation is uncomfortable and slightly weird looking. But if we can get comfortable with that, amazing change is waiting to happen.” Ultimately, we need industry alignment. Payal Luthra, Global Apparel and Textiles Lead at WWF, poignantly reminded us: “The window of opportunity to prevent irreparable damage to communities and ecosystems is rapidly closing.” A huge Thank you to our co-hosts Tapestry and J.Crew Group and speakers. Lets build on these conversations to ignite the next phase of progress.

During our #NYClimateWeek session 'Financing Fashion's Decarbonization Initiatives', moderator Rachel Cernansky, Senior Sustainability Editor at Vogue Business, asked "How do we build a business case for CFOs, given their incentives and mandates?" It’s a question that illuminates the urgent need to build strategic alliances between finance and sustainability to collectively tackle supply chain decarbonization. Among those sharing their insights on stage was Katherine O'Hare, Vice President of Sustainability at J.Crew Group, which is working closely with cotton farmers to invest in the future of their main raw material. This long-term investment, she said, is essential to ensuring both business and environmental sustainability. "To get projects approved, brands are commonly asked what the traditional business case is, and what are the benefits they can get. The main benefit for brands is adding resilience to the supply chain,” she said. Ulrika Leverenz, Head of Green Investment at H&M Group, added: "Looking at the valuation of any company, it makes sense to look long term. Having a long-term mindset is number one." And the need to target investment to ensure the entire supply chain can make the necessary changes cannot be neglected. "We need new revenue streams and incomes for farmers - this is of critical importance." said Lena Staafgard chief operating officer at Better Cotton. As these complex challenges continue, the discussion at #ClimateWeekNYC co-hosted with Tapestry and J.Crew Group, was a reminder that making progress in supply chain decarbonisation will take more than financial investment, but also a shift in leadership and strategic collaboration. Stay tuned as we continue to explore and unpack existing initiatives and opportunities for engagement. #finance #CFO #sustainablefinance #esg #sustainablefashion #climateinvestment #cleantech

“Decarbonization is on all of us. We need collective action and collaboration. This is the only way we will achieve a resilient future for the industry.” These words from WWF Global Apparel and Textiles Lead Payal Luthra captured the spirit of our #NYClimateWeek panel Collective Decarbonisation Mechanisms: Opportunities to Scale Impact. Across the speakers, there was a clear call to action for brands to engage in joint efforts to decarbonise their supply chains, such as the #UnlockProgramme, which was created to support the transition of the global cotton supply chain – and is delivering benefits not just for brands, but for farmers too. “The [Unlock] pilot has proved that it works, and that it can have impact. Farmers want to engage in this,” Peter Bunce Head of Cotton & Microbials N.A. at Indigo Ag. The event was an opportunity to call for more brands to join the initiative. As Laila Petrie, Managing Director of Future Earth Lab.org, which now houses the Unlock Programme, explained during the session, “Unlock has the potential to scale beyond fashion, to other sectors such as food. This can take on the challenge of how to fund Tier 4.” And for those unsure on where to start, fellow panellist Kristina Elinder Liljas Senior Director of Sustainable Finance and Engagement, at Apparel Impact Institute had some clear words of advice. "At Apparel Impact Institute, we're dedicated to 'following the carbon.' We're focusing on tools and strategies that identify and target the most carbon-intensive areas of the supply chain - that’s what will get us to our climate goals." By participating in these collaborative mechanisms, brands can not only make significant strides in decarbonising their supply chains, but also lead in developing innovative solutions that have the potential to redefine the entire industry. Another huge thank you to Tapestry and J.Crew Group for making this event a success with us! #NYClimateWeek #ClimateWeek24 #Fashion #SustainableFashion #ClimateAction #SupplyChain

Yesterday’s ‘Financing Fashion’s Decarbonization Initiatives’ session, hosted by The Fashion Pact, J.Crew Group, and Tapestry at #ClimateWeekNYC, was filled with engaging discussions featuring stakeholders across the industry. We came together to create a space for constructive dialogue between sustainability and finance stakeholders about overcoming hurdles for financing brand scope 3 decarbonization. Our discussion introduced existing pathways for brands to tackle the negative impacts on climate and nature by scaling collective brand scope 3 decarbonization mechanisms like the #FutureSupplierInitiative and #UnlockProgramme. Collectively, we made a call to action for increased financial engagement to enable supply chain decarbonization, for brands to collectively scale existing efforts, bridge the implementation gap and demonstrate tangible results. Some key highlights included: The opportunity for stakeholders across the industry to join #Unlock and the #FutureSupplierInitiative, two-up-and running collective projects addressing decarbonization at farm and factory level. Participants learned from peers working from different departure points to enable decarbonization, openly discussing challenges and hurdles. A stronger understanding was cultivated between sustainability and finance teams to increase C-suite engagement towards decarbonization initiatives.
