While it’s a common stereotype from movies, shouting "Garçon!" to get your waiter’s attention is considered rude in France. "Garçon" literally means "boy" in French, and historically, it was used to refer to young male waiters or servants. In the 19th century, it was common to call out "Garçon!" to get a waiter’s attention, particularly in Parisian cafés and brasseries. This was especially prevalent in a time when the service industry was more hierarchical, and waiters were often seen as lower in social status, making such direct commands more acceptable. So it's understandable that the term "Garçon", now is seen as outdated and somewhat demeaning because it reduces the waiter to a mere "boy" or servant, ignoring their role as a professional.
