While large container vessels present challenges for the use of WAPS systems, these challenges are being addressed. At OceanWings we believe 2025 will see the first orders of WAPS enabled container ships.
Reporter covering bunkering and marine fuels for Petrospot, with a personal interest in global security and conflict
Container vessels are not the most convenient platform for wind propulsion tech. However, a new study from Hapag-Lloyd AG has demonstrated that it is possible to fit WASP to these ships without disrupting the cargo or voyage. Presented at the Royal Institution of Naval Architects Wind Propulsion conference the report was a collaboration with OceanWings, TECHNOLOG services, and the professional offshore sailing Team Malizia. It explores how deploying wind power via sails can significantly reduce fuel consumption on container ships, with savings of up to 20% on transatlantic routes, and around 10% on South American routes. What an honor to take the stage at RINA Conference in London! Brendan Guillouzouic, Performance Manager at OceanWings, and co-author Xavier Guisnel from VPLP Design had the opportunity to present their paper entitled : "From theoretical performance prediction to operation and on-board measurements; review of a complete journey along Canopée project". A fantastic occasion to showcase the achievements of the Canopée project!

We are very proud to work with Hurtigruten on the next generation of coastal cruise ships !
🌍 Hurtigruten is setting sail for a sustainable future 🚢 We’re unveiling the next step in our SeaZero project: the second-generation coastal cruise ship, designed to operate completely emission-free under normal conditions. With cutting-edge technology like large batteries, retractable sails, and solar panels, the vessel aims to reduce energy consumption by 40-50%. “Hurtigruten has been part of an industry with significant pollution, and it is crucial that we now take major steps to reduce emissions. Our goal is to have an emission-free ship in operation by around 2030,” says CEO Hedda Felin. Developed with VARD and the Norwegian maritime industry, key innovations include: ⛵️ OceanWings sails: Could reduce energy consumption by 10%. ☀️ Solar Panels: Adding an extra 2-3% in energy savings. 💨 Air lubrication: Cutting drag by 5-10%. 🛏️ Smart cabins: Allowing guests to monitor and manage their own energy use via an app. We're working to advance sustainable travel and move towards a greener future 🌱 #Hurtigruten #sustainability

after 1 year of Operations.....
1.3-tonne daily fuel savings achievable with automated wing sails Canopée, a pioneering hybrid cargo vessel built by ArianeGroup and equipped with four 37-m automated wing sails has reported fuel savings of 25-50% during transatlantic voyages "With Canopée, which has a displacement of about 10,000 tonnes, we see fuel savings of about 35% on transatlantic routes, which translates to a payback period of about five years. If you consider the potential use of zero-emissions fuels, which are typically more expensive and have lower energy density, the payback period could be reduced to just one to two years." https://lnkd.in/eR_8ebMr OceanWings ArianeGroup

🛥️ Wind Propulsion gains momentum at SMM Hamburg 2024 What a special week here at Hamburg. More than ever, energy efficiency and wind-powered technology integration on-board was on everybody's lips. We were happy to see that free power of wind is more and more considered by owners as the credible and mature solution to further reduce fuel consumption and emissions. Earlier in the week, our COO Romain GRANDSART was delighted to give a presentation where he shared insightful information about our new and expanded #OceanWings® product range. He also revealed how our infrastructure-free technology answers today the needs of the merchant fleet. We truly thank you for your visit at our booth and are looking forward to push our discussion further! 🌬️ Fair winds Christophe Paillusseau Alexis BIENAISE Emmanuelle BROOKS BRONCHARD Alice Caillette
