🎬 Earlier this month, the BOLD Forum took place gathering the key players driving beauty and health innovation in order to #CreateTheBeautyThatMovesTheWorld ➡️ At L'Oréal, and within BOLD, we believe pioneering beauty requires co-creating with the best – suppliers, academics, startups, founders, research institutes, innovative companies, and investors. This "world of co" - co-llaboration, co-operation, co-creation – is what drives us forward. For years, this collaborative work has given rise to a strong BOLD innovation ecosystem that brings the forum to life. The fourth edition featured discussions on a range of topics, including the impact of longevity on beauty routines, advancements in biotechnology, and future beauty trends. Beauty innovation was at the heart of the day's events, and we're excited to share a sneak peek with you! Welcome Abolis Biotechnologies to the BOLD portfolio! We’re proud to have been one of the leading investors in a financing round for the biotech startup that’s empowering the transition to more sustainable production models. Based in France, Abolis taps into the power of biotechnology and the unexplored potential of microorganisms to provide companies with tailor-made, eco-friendly solutions. Through their innovative approach, the startup develops materials, including ingredients, that are kinder to the planet and promote a more circular economy. Now, with BOLD’s support, that partnership has developed into a tri-party agreement between Abolis, L'Oréal and Evonik (specialty manufacturer and long-term partner of L’Oréal). The three will work together to discover, develop and manufacture sustainable ingredients for beauty products. The latest news ushers in a new strategic phase in L’Oréal’s collaboration with Abolis. The two originally partnered in 2019 and continued their work with the launch of an extended lab in 2022. This development exemplifies BOLD’s role in supporting L’Oréal’s purpose, including advancing L’Oréal for the Future commitments, most notably in prioritizing bio-based ingredients in its beauty formulations. By combining innovative biotech with L’Oréal’s beauty expertise, we’re reimagining the future of our industry to #CreateTheBeautyThatMovesTheWorld. #FortuneFavorsTheBOLD Christophe Babule Laurent SCHMITT Samantha Etienne Muriel ATIAS Tony Khajenouri Julie Pelcener Presca Ahn Filippo Principi Adeline Girou Camille Jaegle Guive Balooch Guillaume Climeau Frédéric Legrand Cyrille Pauthenier Valerie Brunel Gwenael Servant

Welcome to the future of sustainable beauty 🚀 Five years ago, Debut Founder and CEO Joshua Britton came up with a game-changing idea for ingredient development while researching his PhD. Five years later, the company’s approach to ingredient creation is redefining what’s possible for cosmetics. The San Diego-based company’s proprietary biotechnology platform harnesses enzymes to create sustainable, high-performance ingredients for cosmetics that are better for the planet, and superior in quality. That’s where BOLD comes in with key support and collaborative opportunities with L'Oréal. In a recently announced partnership, the two are set to develop over a dozen bio-identical ingredients for beauty and personal care products. This collaboration also prioritizes sustainability by preserving biodiversity and securing responsible supply chains. By keeping its unwavering focus on producing bio-based ingredients at the necessary volume and quality, Debut strategically complements L'Oréal's global R&D efforts. That also entails playing a key role in advancing its L'Oréal for the Future sustainability goals. Through Debut’s unique biomanufacturing processes, cosmetics are not only safer, more effective and even hyper-personalized to consumers’ unique needs; products align with the Group’s environmental commitments, including preserving biodiversity, securing responsible supply chains and promoting a circular economy. At BOLD, we back visionaries like Debut, transforming the beauty industry and defining its future. With Debut and our portfolio companies, we’re not just stepping into tomorrow—we’re shaping it. #FortuneFavorsTheBOLD #CreateTheBeautyThatMovesTheWorld Christophe Babule Laurent SCHMITT Samantha Etienne Muriel ATIAS Tony Khajenouri Julie Pelcener Presca Ahn Adeline Girou Filippo Principi Camille Jaegle Adam R. What’s one thing our portfolio companies all have in common? They’re first in line when it comes to industry-changing innovation. BOLD portfolio company CARBIOS was published in Nature Portfolio, one of the world’s most influential scientific journals. The article explores a new process for developing plastics that automatically biodegrade. By embedding enzymes in polylactic acid (PLA) plastics, items will rapidly degrade under the right composting conditions. Materials remain intact during long-term storage, making this solution ideal for commercial packaging applications (e.g., packets, capsules, food containers). In other words, Carbios continues to spearhead cutting-edge innovation to develop eco-friendly packaging solutions that are kinder to the planet, without compromising on quality. “As Carbios expands its portfolio of enzymatic solutions beyond PET, enzyme-embedded PLA represents a major leap forward, addressing a critical gap in the market for compostable plastic,” says Emmanuel LADENT 🌏 CEO CARBIOS. This isn’t the first time Carbios’ groundbreaking work has appeared in Nature; in 2020, the journal highlighted the company’s innovative work in PET biorecycling technology. With this latest article, Carbios underscores its leading position in improving plastic recyclability. Huge congratulations to Carbios for this amazing advancement, and we’re excited to see what’s next for the BOLD portfolio company! 💥 In with a Big Bang! We’re thrilled to see L'Oréal's Big Bang Beauty Tech Innovation Program officially active across all our North Asia markets. First launched in Mainland China in 2020, Big Bang embraces open innovation to develop beauty solutions with startups and innovators. Its expansion to Japan and Korea in 2023, followed by recent launches in Hong Kong SAR and Taiwan Region, underscores L’Oréal’s commitment to spearheading cutting-edge beauty solutions. The spirit of partnership and commitment to innovation that guides us at BOLD is also a key part to the Group’s program. Big Bang aims to foster the co-creation of innovative products and experiences, connecting emerging beauty startups with L’Oréal experts. So how did the Big Bang program get so big? Thanks to these key milestones: 🚀 2021: • Partnered up with Oriental Beauty Vally • Partnered up with Business France and established French Track under Big Bang China • Enriched with investment (Meicifan) and youth (Youth Bang) 🥇 2023: • Expanded its scope to include AI and sustainability as transversal topic • Signed as a Sino-French strategic partnership project during French president Macron's visit to China • Launched in Japan and Korea, with announcement and MOU signing with MSS at Viva Tech. 🎉 2024: • Rollout to Hong Kong SAR and Taiwan Region, ensuring coverage of all North Asia markets • Rollout to SAPEMNA and became the first group open innovation project worldwide A key strength of Big Bang is that each market has a unique approach and the opportunity to choose themes tailored to local consumers. L’Oréal Japan broadened its reach to embrace cutting-edge technologies for both skin and haircare. L’Oréal Korea launched a new digital track dedicated to exploring the vast potential of AI, alongside its established R&I efforts. L’Oréal Taiwan champions sustainability through its "Green Beauty Consumer Journey" and a circular economy approach. L’Oréal Hong Kong centered its efforts around "Customer Experience Transformation," concentrating on the development of “smart” retail experiences. Big Bang is a crucial platform for BOLD to discover the rising stars of the beauty world. We aim to partner with startups that will support L’Oréal’s mission and help promising beauty tech ventures make their mark.
