Leading with Purpose for an Inclusive and Sustainable World.

À propos

The Sustainability & Organizations Institute is an interdisciplinary Institute at HEC Paris Business School that brings together over 60 researchers and professors. Together, we carry out research, teach and implement ideas to organize and lead our responses to the daunting challenges of our time. These contemporary challenges include climatic constraints, social inequality, loss of purpose, technological disruption, epidemics, social contestation, ethical imperatives, and liberalization and regulation. The S&O Institute with its three centers: Purposeful Leadership, Inclusive & Social Business and Climate & Earth, addresses key challenges following the THINK, TEACH, ACT approach. Its mission statement is to contribute to our understanding of contemporary challenges, support anyone with a role to play in ecological and social transition, and prepare future generations of managers to lead in these complicated times. We seek to participate in a re-foundation of business and market organization, inside-out through research, education and action, and outside-in through the recognition of key stakeholders, including investors, civil society, and regulators.

🗨️ Julie Battilana : « 𝐼𝑙 𝑒𝑠𝑡 𝑒𝑠𝑠𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑖𝑒𝑙 𝑞𝑢𝑒 𝑛𝑜𝑢𝑠 𝑝𝑟𝑒𝑛𝑖𝑜𝑛𝑠 𝑝𝑙𝑒𝑖𝑛𝑒𝑚𝑒𝑛𝑡 𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑠𝑐𝑖𝑒𝑛𝑐𝑒 𝑑𝑒 𝑙𝑎 𝑟𝑒𝑠𝑝𝑜𝑛𝑠𝑎𝑏𝑖𝑙𝑖𝑡𝑒́ 𝑞𝑢𝑒 𝑛𝑜𝑢𝑠 𝑎𝑣𝑜𝑛𝑠 𝑒𝑛 𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑡 𝑞𝑢𝑒 𝑐𝑖𝑡𝑜𝑦𝑒𝑛𝑠 𝑑’𝑒𝑥𝑒𝑟𝑐𝑒𝑟 𝑛𝑜𝑡𝑟𝑒 𝑝𝑜𝑢𝑣𝑜𝑖𝑟 𝑝𝑜𝑢𝑟 𝑒́𝑣𝑖𝑡𝑒𝑟 𝑙𝑒𝑠 𝑎𝑏𝑢𝑠 𝑒𝑡 𝑟𝑒𝑛𝑓𝑜𝑟𝑐𝑒𝑟 𝑙𝑎 𝑑𝑒́𝑚𝑜𝑐𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑒.

➡️ Lisez l’article : https://lnkd.in/ekzNxz7i #HECParis #Sustainability #Anthropocene #TransitionEcologique #JusticeClimatique #Leadership #EconomieDurable #Innovation avec Yann Algan, Julie Thinès, Fernando Javier Diaz Lopez, Ph.D., Daniel Halbheer, Marie-Pierre Lethiec - Seyfried

  • 🌟 Congratulations to Hélène Löning for Her Leadership in Environmental and Sustainable Accounting – 2024 Vernimmen Award Winner! 🌟 We are thrilled to celebrate Hélène Löning, who has been honored with the 2024 Vernimmen Award in recognition of her excellence in teaching, particularly in environmental and sustainable finance. Known for her pivotal shift towards sustainability accounting, Hélène has made an outstanding impact on both her students and colleagues at HEC Paris. In her own words, Hélène shared: “Metrics are not perfect, but that’s no reason to discard them,” she said. “𝑊𝑒 𝑛𝑒𝑒𝑑 𝑐𝑟𝑖𝑡𝑖𝑐𝑎𝑙 𝑎𝑐𝑡𝑖𝑣𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑠, 𝑏𝑢𝑡 𝑚𝑜𝑟𝑒 𝑖𝑚𝑝𝑜𝑟𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑡𝑙𝑦, 𝑤𝑒 𝑛𝑒𝑒𝑑 𝑏𝑢𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑒𝑠𝑠 𝑎𝑐𝑡𝑖𝑣𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑠 𝑤ℎ𝑜 𝑎𝑟𝑒 𝑐𝑜𝑚𝑚𝑖𝑡𝑡𝑒𝑑 𝑡𝑜 𝑚𝑎𝑘𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑐ℎ𝑎𝑛𝑔𝑒 ℎ𝑎𝑝𝑝𝑒𝑛.” Today, 75% of her courses are focused on carbon accounting and green finance, preparing students to tackle some of the most pressing challenges in the business world. The Vernimmen Award, named in honor of the legendary finance professor Pierre Vernimmen, is a prestigious recognition that highlights both pedagogical excellence and meaningful connections with students. Hélène’s innovative approach exemplifies this, inspiring the next generation of leaders to think critically and act boldly in the face of global sustainability challenges. During the award ceremony, Éloïc Peyrache, Dean of HEC Paris, used a powerful metaphor to describe the essential role of professors: “𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝑠𝑡𝑢𝑑𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑠 𝑎𝑟𝑒 𝑡ℎ𝑒 ℎ𝑒𝑎𝑟𝑡 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑐𝑎𝑚𝑝𝑢𝑠, 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑝𝑒𝑟𝑠𝑜𝑛𝑛𝑒𝑙 𝑖𝑠 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑏𝑜𝑑𝑦 𝑜𝑓 𝑜𝑢𝑟 𝑠𝑐ℎ𝑜𝑜𝑙, 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑝𝑟𝑜𝑓𝑒𝑠𝑠𝑜𝑟𝑠 𝑎𝑟𝑒 𝑡ℎ𝑒 ℎ𝑒𝑎𝑑. Her work continues to inspire us all and serves as a beacon for the future of sustainable business education. Join us in congratulating Hélène and also Michel Safars, second Vernimmen honoree on this great achievement! 🎉 ➡️ Read more about the Vernimenn Award: https://lnkd.in/eRRre7uw 👂 Listen to the HEC Podcast regarding Hélène's commitment and teaching "Je suis une architecte": https://lnkd.in/e6cZytZu #HECParis #VernimmenAward #Sustainability #SustainableAccounting #TeachingExcellence #Congratulations cc Rodolphe Durand, Andrea Masini, Luc Paugam, PhD, CFA, Bénédicte Faivre-Tavignot, Cécile de Lisle (Lavrard-Meyer), Christophe Pérignon, Pascal Quiry,

  • 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐄𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐁𝐞𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐨𝐫 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐂𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐒&𝐎 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐭𝐞 𝐋𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐡 𝐒𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐫   𝑈𝑛𝑑𝑒𝑟 𝑤ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑑𝑖𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛𝑠 𝑑𝑜 𝑝𝑒𝑜𝑝𝑙𝑒 𝑎𝑐𝑡 𝑒𝑡ℎ𝑖𝑐𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑦 𝑖𝑛 𝑚𝑎𝑟𝑘𝑒𝑡 𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑡𝑒𝑥𝑡𝑠? 🤔   This was the question asked by Roberto Weber from the University of Zurich as he opened the S&O Institute Lunch Seminar this past Tuesday, October 8, 2024 at HEC Paris. Roberto presented his recent work on “𝐒𝐞𝐥𝐟-𝐠𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐛𝐞𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐨𝐫 𝐢𝐧 𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐭𝐬” exploring how ethical behavior in the workplace can lead to significant societal impacts and how negative effects can be mitigated. The research highlights the central role of intermediary actors in corporate misconduct. Under competitive pressure, these intermediaries tend to act in ways that may harm society but benefit the principals they work for.   Through an experimental market context, the research findings showed that giving agents the chance to self-govern and to introduce even an unenforced code of conduct, improved ethical behavior and reduced harmful outcomes. On the other hand, delegating decisions without any code of conduct led to the worst societal outcomes.   🔑 𝐓𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐲: Self-governance plays a crucial role in limiting unethical behavior and promoting ethical practices in markets.   In the second part of the seminar, Aluna Wang from HEC Paris, presented her work on “𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐯𝐬. 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐂𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧”. 📱 The research investigates how commercial collaborations affect influencers’ content strategies on social media platforms and how such collaborations might degrade content quality, reduce diversity, and potentially influence societal values.   By studying 1,529 influencers on the Chinese platform Zhihu, the research found that after entering commercial partnerships, influencers often stick to existing content themes rather than exploring new ideas. This leads to less diversity in the content on the platform.   🔑𝐓𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐲: When influencers are financially compensated, they are more likely to stick to familiar content. This raises concerns about the long-term impact of such collaborations on content quality and diversity on social media platforms.   👏 A big thank you to both of our amazing speakers for an eye-opening session and to all the participants for your presence and valuable contributions.    cc Marieke Huysentruyt, Rodolphe Durand, Bénédicte Faivre-Tavignot, Iiris Sacchet, Romain Briat, Brian Hill, Chang Wa Huynh, Leandro Nardi, Andrew Montandon, Anastasia Buyalskaya, Stephen Michael Impink, Yasir Dewan, Can He, Octavio Augusto de Barros, Bariscan Y., Ben Li, Bertrand Quélin     #EthicsInBusiness #ContentCreation #SocialMedia #SelfGovernance #BusinessEthics #HECParis #InfluencerMarketing #DiversityInContent

  • 🌍 How are future business leaders being educated on the challenges of business and human rights? This is a key question that the Financial Times has begun to address by highlighting several courses launched by business schools around the world. 📰 Read the FT piece: https://lnkd.in/daWcsWWj At HEC Paris, we've seen a significant rise in programs focusing on business, human rights, and transparency. Notably, several of these courses have been launched by Charles Autheman, an HEC Paris and Sciences Po Paris alumnus, and a member of the Global Business School Network for Business and Human Rights, where he leads the "supply chains and modern slavery" research cluster. 🤔 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐞𝐝, 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐟𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐚 𝐟𝐚𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐫 𝐛𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐡𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐛𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬?  This question is at the heart ❤️ of the courses and challenges Charles Autheman has been teaching and organizing for the past three years for young scholars at HEC's pre-experience level. As Charles notes, his goal is to "𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑛𝑒𝑐𝑡 𝑠𝑡𝑢𝑑𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑠 𝑤𝑖𝑡ℎ 𝑑𝑖𝑣𝑒𝑟𝑠𝑒 𝑏𝑢𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑒𝑠𝑠 𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑙𝑖𝑡𝑖𝑒𝑠 𝑓𝑟𝑜𝑚 𝑑𝑖𝑓𝑓𝑒𝑟𝑒𝑛𝑡 𝑟𝑒𝑔𝑖𝑜𝑛𝑠 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑒𝑥𝑝𝑜𝑠𝑒 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑚 𝑡𝑜 𝑝𝑟𝑎𝑐𝑡𝑖𝑐𝑎𝑙 𝑑𝑖𝑙𝑒𝑚𝑚𝑎𝑠 𝑡ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑝𝑟𝑜𝑓𝑒𝑠𝑠𝑖𝑜𝑛𝑎𝑙𝑠 𝑤𝑖𝑙𝑙 𝑖𝑛𝑒𝑣𝑖𝑡𝑎𝑏𝑙𝑦 𝑓𝑎𝑐𝑒 𝑖𝑛 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑖𝑟 𝑐𝑎𝑟𝑒𝑒𝑟𝑠" 📚 A tangible example of this is a recent assignment given to students in the HEC Paris Masters in Sustainability & Social Innovation program, where they were asked to critically examine a pressing business and human rights issue, proposing actionable recommendations or evaluating existing solutions. ➡️ https://lnkd.in/gXkn3rfD In today's interconnected world, business decisions can unintentionally impact human rights, making it imperative that future leaders are equipped to recognize and address these risks.
