Environmental dumping of cooling equipment is the practice of selling outdated, inefficient cooling equipment—often using obsolete refrigerants—in markets of vulnerable developing countries. These products, which fail to meet efficiency and environmental standards in developed countries, find their way into regions where regulations are less stringent. Kofi A. Agyarko, Director, Renewable Energy, Energy Efficiency & Climate Change (REEECC) Energy Commission speaks with Denise San Valentin, Programme Management Officer, CCAC about Environmental dumping of cooling equipments at #COP13MOP36. Currently, there are over 90+ billion tonnes CO2e of ozone-depleting substances (ODS) and HFCs currently contained within equipment or are expected to enter the market by 2100. This is more than twice the entire planet’s annual carbon dioxide emissions. Lifecycle refrigerant management (LRM) is crucial for reducing hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) because it addresses the entire lifecycle of refrigerants, from production to disposal. Ana Maria Kleymeyer, Delegate, Federated States of Micronesia speaks about how Lifecycle Refrigerant management (LRM) and energy efficiency are being discussed at #COP13MOP36.

Through the CCAC Cooling Hub, leading partners in the cooling sector come together to: • Elevate awareness on the critical role of Lifecycle Refrigerant Management (LRM) in mitigating climate impacts and achieving multiple benefits. • Support developing countries to implement ambitious LRM approaches, aligning with national climate goals. • Mobilise and facilitate access to financial, technical, and policy resources necessary for successful LRM strategy deployment. • Foster and champion international collaboration, fostering dialogue and best practices to accelerate sustainable cooling solutions worldwide. Makato Kato, Co-Lead of CCAC Cooling Hub speaks with Denise San Valentin, Programme Management Officer, CCAC Secretariat on Japan’s leadership on LRM.
