Ruth Oniang'o The question above is one that weighs heavily on the minds of many who care deeply about Africa's future. Across the continent, we see women shouldering the burden of feeding families, often struggling on land they do not own, without the essential resources needed to cultivate it effectively. These women work tirelessly, not out of choice but out of necessity, in a landscape where men have migrated to cities, seeking work, leaving the responsibility of food production almost entirely to the women left behind. Once, agricultural support systems brought knowledge and advice right to the farmer's doorstep. Extension workers would ride their bicycles to farms, offering guidance and encouragement. Today, this level of support is rare, leaving farmers isolated and, at times, even more knowledgeable than the few extension officers they do see. The breakdown of these systems has left farmers, especially women, largely on their own, with minimal resources and support in their struggle to feed communities. Then there is the issue of land—a deeply personal, almost sacred matter for many African families. Young men, unable to secure even a small piece of family land, feel unmoored, unable to marry or envision a future as farmers. Their hopes for stability and family life are often dashed by the lack of land and limited job opportunities. With rapid population growth and land shortages, these issues will only grow more intense in the coming years. How, then, can we expect Africa to meet its food needs tomorrow when these challenges loom so large today? Amidst this stark reality, however, lies hope in Africa's youth. They are vibrant and full of potential, but they need incentives to see farming as a path worth pursuing. For farming to attract the younger generation, it must be seen as a viable and even respectable career. If we want the youth to take up this mantle, we must give them the tools they need: affordable access to inputs, credit, knowledge, and guaranteed markets. Africa’s food future relies on restoring dignity to farming, especially for women and the youth. It’s time to invest meaningfully in those who work the land, to make agriculture something people are proud to be a part of again.
