Hutto Surname Meaning
User-submitted Reference
I believe the Hutto surname to be derived from the the French surname, Hautot, having origins in Normandy, France, near the city of Rouen. Hautot is also a common place name there that means 'hill', from a Norse (Viking) origin. All Huttoes in the United States are descendants of Isaac Hutto who emigrated to the new world in the 1730s, settling in the Orangeburg, SC area. His country of origin is listed as Germany and they spelled their name as Otto. However, subsequent generations spelled it as Hottow and then Hutto. Isaac's date of birth is listed as 1695, in Germany.
I believe Isaac was a descendant of Huguenots named Hautot who fled Germany after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes. The Edict of Nantes, signed by King Henry IV of France allowed for religious freedom in Catholic-predominant France. His grandson, Louis XIV of France was not so tolerant. He revoked the Edict in 1685 and ordered all proclaiming to be Protestant expelled from the Kingdom. I believe Isaac is a son/grandson of one of these Protestant refugees.
The reason I believe the Hautot/Otto/Hutto families are all the same is language. The name was Hautot in Normandy. Hautot is pronounced roughly like "owe-toe" in English. When Isaac's family (father/grandfather, I believe) fled to Germany, in German, that would be spelled "Otto." Isaac was born there with the Germanized last name Otto. As an adult, Isaac decides to move his family to the New World and try their luck. Upon arrival in South Carolina, he would have been asked how to spell his name to register on the emigration records. Knowing that his forefathers bore the name Hautot in France, he spelled it the best be could as Hottow. As I said before, Hottow was Anglicized to Hutto.
