A surname recorded in Aberdeen. From the Hebrew personal name Dayye'l, "El is my judge," though some scholars think there is connection with Avestan danu, 'wise' or 'wisdom.' Daniel, son of Herleuine, witnessed a charter by Uchtred, son of Fergus, lord of Galloway, c. 1166 (Coll. AGAA., IV, p. 55), and another early individual of the name gave origin to the ancient barony of Danzielstoun in the parish of Kilmalcolm. Walter Daniel had a safe conduct to travel in England, 1424 (Bain, IV, 970). John Dangzell in Dunfermline, 1562 (Dunfermline). By the Gaels this name was adopted as an equivalent for Donald.
