A female name. Greek χλόη ‘a young green shoot', an epithet of Demeter. St Paul (I Cor. i. 22) mentions a woman of Corinth named Chloe, and the name was adopted, like most of those which occur in the Epistles, in the 17th C. It is still a favourite with American Negroes, but its main use has been by pastoral poets.

(Pronounced cló-ee.) In Greek, ‘blooming’ or ‘verdant’, Chloe was ‘the summer epithet’ of Demeter as ‘the protectress of green fields’ (Yonge). In late C16-17, the name figured largely in English pastoral, hence in lyric poetry: e. g. Dryden, in A Rondelay, writes thus, Chloe found Amyntas lying All in tears upon the plain; Sighing to himself, and crying, Wretched I, to love in vain! Kiss me, dear, before my dying; Kiss me once, and ease my pain.

A female name derived from the Greek name Χλοη, signifying a green bud or germ. Chloe was an epithet of Ceres at Athens. The name, says Lemprière, is supposed to bear the same signification as Flava, so often applied to the goddess of corn, and from its signification (χλοη herba virens) has generally been applied to women possessed of beauty and simplicity.
