Many children in the Pacific are being left behind by one or both parents migrating to find work from their places of origin. The impact this has on a child’s development, economic status, opportunities, and wellbeing can range from detrimental to beneficial – and much can be influenced by the right policy decisions. The Government of Vanuatu in collaboration with the Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) and UNICEF is co-hosting a seminar on “Protecting Children in the Context of Labour Mobility”. This Seminar provides an opportunity to engage with government leaders from selected countries and a diverse group of stakeholders, to better understand the impacts of labour mobility on children who are left behind.

“The people are connected to the land through their custom and culture. What are the people going to do when the land is below the water and sea levels have risen? We all have the right to clean food & water, education & health. Climate change is stealing these rights from us.” As the UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell visits Vanuatu, watch 14-year-old Gabrielle’s plea to world leaders to take #ClimateAction NOW 👇

At Mele Health Centre in Vanuatu, UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell met with mothers who bring their children here to get checked and treated.
