We address this research gap using a longitudinal sample of 245 first-tier automotive suppliers and find that an increased systems integration capability positively affects financial performance. By considering the crucial role of manufacturing alliances, we also find evidence that vertical alliances with buyers positively moderate the relationship between systems integration capabilities and performance, while horizontal alliances have a negative moderating effect. These results contribute to the dynamic capabilities literature by providing empirical evidence that systems integration capability is a relevant predictor of firm performance, and expands the current understanding of how system manufacturers should manage their business-to-business (B2B) relationships.

In pursuit of capturing these changing preferences, firms such as assembly plants are required to face substantial manufacturing obligations due to this increasing product complexity. In the automobile industry, modularization has been suggested as an effective approach to manage this complexity. Our study focuses on the moderating effect of modularity and supplier-buyer integration on the relationship between firm performance and product portfolio complexity. Based on our study in the Brazilian automobile industry, we empirically test the argument that product modularity and supplier-buyer integration could mitigate the negative influence of complexity on firm performance.

We draw upon knowledge based view to argue that modularization and supplier integration can effectively facilitate knowledge transfer and knowledge creation. This process mitigates the negative impact of complexity on business unit performance. We empirically test this argument in the context of Brazilian automotive industry.

De... more Are suppliers capable of increasing industry value capture by investing in modular components? Despite the abundant research on product modularity and modular production systems, the understanding on how module providers are able to capture value from such components is still scant in the literature. This study fills this gap by analyzing how module suppliers achieve a sustained competitive advantage by increasing their focus on modular products and innovations as well as managing their vertically related operations. Results from the global automotive industry reveal that suppliers are capable of capturing more value from modules when investing in modular innovations, integrating manufacturing operations via M&As and strengthening downstream relationships through strategic alliances. Managerial and theoretical implications from a transaction costs and capabilities perspectives are assessed.

Built on the work of Trompennars (1994) we explore cultural differences in particularistic orientation and its implications on relational favoritism, i.e., making decisions in favor of special relations. Based on data from predominantly managerial samples from Brazil, China, Germany and the United States of America we found that although particularistic orientation is stronger in Brazil and China than in Germany and the U.S., Brazilian and Chinese managers also perceive more negative consequences of relational favoritism and hold a more critical attitude toward it. Furthermore, through scenario manipulations, in which a general manager makes a promotion decision in favor of candidates with special relations such as a relative, a hometown fellow, an alumnus, and a close friend, we assessed the level of perceived procedural justice. Similarities and dif...
