💡𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗮𝘁𝗵 𝗔𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗱 Today, I am heading to the Finnish Government Research and Innovation Council seminar to hear from minister Sari Multala and MP Matias Mäkynen on how Finland’s strategic R&D decisions are paving the way for a resilient and sustainable #future. Finland consistently ranks among the world’s most innovative nations, and we have much to celebrate in our robust ecosystem and commitment to research and development. However, there’s even greater potential to unlock. 🚀 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝗪𝗲 𝗙𝗮𝗰𝗲: Even with our strengths, several barriers persist: • 𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘆 𝗖𝗼𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: A need for better alignment across agencies. • 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗔𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘆𝘀𝗶𝘀: Policies often lack thorough assessment before implementation. • 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗚𝗮𝗽𝘀: Limited synergy between academia and industry. 🎯 𝗔 𝗕𝗼𝗹𝗱 𝗚𝗼𝗮𝗹 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝟮𝟬𝟯𝟬 One area of consensus is the ambitious 4% R&D investment target as a share of GDP by 2030. This commitment reflects our vision for innovation-led growth. But increasing R&D inputs alone won’t suffice. We need a nuanced strategy that prioritizes the translation of investments into tangible societal and economic impacts. 📄 𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗣𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗣𝗮𝗽𝗲𝗿: “𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻” This paper advocates for a transformative approach to innovation — one that goes beyond traditional metrics and engages all stakeholders to build a sustainable, inclusive innovation ecosystem. To maximize the impact of R&D, we emphasize: • Demand-driven policies, • Strengthened public-private partnerships, and • Alignment of innovation with broader societal goals. Growing salad on the Moon? It’s closer than you think! 🌒🥗 🌱 VTT is part of the LunarPlant project, creating a new way to grow plants without soil using a cellulose-based support for roots. 🌱 Our biodegradable, plant-friendly material can also make food production on Earth more sustainable by replacing traditional materials like rock wool and peat used in greenhouses. “The research on cellulose-based plant support is our commitment to sustainable solutions for food production, both on this planet and beyond,” says VTT’s Elina Pääkkönen. 🌱 We're collaborating with Norges teknisk-naturvitenskapelige universitet (NTNU), SINTEF and CIRiS to optimise this technology for closed-loop systems.
