One of the most frequently asked questions about our new Romania factory is: how have we achieved the zero CO2 emission standard - as the first tire factory in the world. 🌍 Our achievement is powered by a combination of innovative solutions: ☀️ All electricity used at the factory is CO2 emission free. Part of the electricity used in the factory is generated by on-site solar panels.  🔋 Steam used to cure the tires is generated by innovative electric boilers which use only zero CO2 emission electricity instead if the usual fossil fuels such as coal or gas. ⚙️ Tire manufacturing process is very energy efficient as only the most modern technology and machinery is utilized.  Inspired by our purpose to reinvent tires and how they are made, we designed and build the new factory to be CO2 emission free from the start. Additionally, the factory aims to meet the same zero waste-to-landfill standard as our factories in Finland and the US. What a day of celebration! Today we inaugurated our passenger car tire factory in Oradea, Romania. The honored guests at our Grand Opening event were the Romania State Councilor from the Chancellery of the Prime Minister Mr. Florin Spataru, who brought a message from Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu to the event, the Romania Minster of Labor Simona Bucura-Oprescu, Bihor County Council President Ilie Bolojan as well as Ambassador of Finland to Romania and the Republic of Moldova Leena Liukkonen. Among the speakers were also Jukka Moisio, our President and CEO, Jukka Hienonen, the Chairman of the Board, Adrian Kaczmarczyk, SVP, Operation Excellence of Nokian Tyres and Susanna Tusa, General Director of Nokian Tyres Romania Operations. After the festivities at the speakers podium and the ceremonial cutting of the ribbon, our very own Nokian Tyres team members had their time to shine as they led the guests on a factory tour around the facility they have worked so hard to build. Two groups of local ninth-graders came to visit our headquarters, as Nokian Tyres participates in the Environmental Education Week that our Finnish hometown of Nokia organizes for children and youth 🌍 This year the theme of the Environmental Education Week is climate change. Our sustainability experts welcomed the guests to hear about the things that impact the carbon footprint of tires – and how Nokian Tyres aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions throughout the entire product life cycle, all the way from raw materials to end-of-life. The part that stirred the most discussion was at the end: we talked about how everyone can contribute to combating climate change with their daily choices. Residue birch bark may soon be found in Nokian Tyres tires: we have signed a development agreement with a Swedish biomaterial science company Reselo to further develop their renewable material Reselo Rubber as a potential new raw material in tires. Reselo Rubber is made from birch bark sourced from the residue of the global pulp, paper and plywood industry 🌳 We aim, in cooperation with Reselo, to develop the material further to adapt it for commercial tire production. Seamless team work and diverse tasks is what we enjoy – even if it involves picking up a scythe 😀 Last year Nokian Tyres adopted a meadow in support of the region’s biodiversity program, committing to caring for it as part of our biodiversity work. Yesterday was the yearly event where our team members can volunteer for nature conservation on the meadow while spending an afternoon with old colleagues and getting to know new ones. Afterwards the volunteers enjoyed dinner, sauna and a dip in the lake in a true Finnish fashion. Our adopted meadow, located about 50km from our headquarters in Finland, is an endangered traditional biotope housing species such as moonwort and maiden pink 🌼 Traditional meadows are important for many local plant and animal species. However, meadows and the species living there are disappearing, as many meadows have been turned into forests or built on, or because they are not taken care of. We are launching a significant development for the forestry industry. The new tire size for Forest King F2 tire family meets the increasing demands of Cut to Length (CTL) forestry machines, particularly the larger, more powerful forwarders and harvesters now being deployed in the industry.
