We deal with ways in which and reasons for which people remember and forget historical epizodes, spaces and figures stemming from the period of socialist Yugoslavia. It focuses of how different agents narrate, experience and make use of the past in order to affirm or challenge the current social order, to relate their identity to a wider community, to create continuity in their lives. Our research is placed at the intersections of the politics and cultures of memory, at the meeting points of people and the materiality of their environment. The four cases are chosen to point to diverse methodological strategies we apply, but also to very different ways in which the socialist legacy manifest itself and is treated nowadays. Those mnemonic practices span from neglect and removal, as symptoms of intentional collective amnesia, over contestations and clashes of memory, which occur when different social groups claim their right to inscribe their views of the “right history” in public space, to preservation and glorification.
