This time, the Ex Machina and Annihilation filmmaker isn't riding solo. He has teamed up with Ray Mendoza, an Iraq War veteran (who also served as the military supervisor on Civil War) to write and direct the brutal drama, which will take its audience into the harsh realities of an American Navy SEALs platoon. The star-studded drama is filled to the brim with familiar faces — some facing more dire circumstances than ever. Reservations Dogs alum D’pharaoh Woon-A-Tai stars as Mendoza, who joined the Navy in 1997 and served for over 16 years as a Member of SEAL Team 5. He's joined by The Bear's Will Poulter, Riverdale alum Charles Melton, Shogun's Cosmo Jarvis, Heartstopper's Kit Connor, To All the Boys alum Noah Centineo, and Gladiator II star Joseph Quinn. "A visceral, boots-on-the-ground story of modern warfare, told like never before: in real time and based on the memory of the people who lived it," reads the official synopsis. Inside Civil War, Alex Garland's provocative take on what a second American conflict could look like Where the trailer begins, everything seems calm enough: the platoon is surveiling, but still finding time for snark and pushups. But when the action begins, it doesn't hold back: all at once, their surroundings erupt into chaos, smoke, and gunfire. "Everything is based on memory," the poster's tagline ominously promises. Thus far, Garland has been tight-lipped about the upcoming film, but briefly mentioned codirecting with Mendoza while chatting about Civil War in March. “I respect [Mendoza] a great deal, though we’re very different," he told The Guardian. Garland has an exciting 2025 ahead; the upcoming year will also mark the release of 28 Years Later, the long-anticipated sequel to 28 Days Later, the 2002 film he penned with filmmaker Danny Boyle. Warfare, which also stars Finn Bennett, Taylor John Smith, Michael Gandolfini, Adain Bradley, Evan Holtzman, and Henrique Zaga, is slated to arrive in theaters in 2025. Watch the trailer above.
