If there's one thing Virgin River loves, it's a season-ending cliffhanger. Season 6 is no exception, leaving Jack (Martin Henderson) facing something that appears to be absolutely shocking. After Charmaine (Lauren Hammersley) fails to show up to do Mel's hair and make-up for their wedding, Jack and Mel (Alexandra Breckenridge) begin to worry. Yes, Charmaine has been a bit spacey lately, operating on almost zero sleep with newborn twins. But after more than 24 hours with no word, the newlyweds start to fear that something beyond mere forgetfulness might be afoot. Particularly because Charmaine is locked in an ugly custody battle for the twins with Calvin (David Cubitt). Virgin River showrunner talks season 6 setup of potential prequel and other burning questions So, Jack goes off to Charmaine's house to check in on her, only to find her house disturbingly quiet and empty. He wanders around before he reaches a shut door, which presumably leads to a bedroom. Jack opens the door and we see only his reaction — a look of absolute horror — before we cut to black. Naturally, we're left to wonder what it is that has startled Jack so thoroughly. "A Peloton," jokes showrunner Patrick Sean Smith. "Just kidding. It would seem that Charmaine has found herself in the middle of a mess, which is true to her character, and that it will pull various members of our ensemble into this story and into this mess." Though Henderson previously knew who it was that shot Jack (an identity he had to keep secret for more than an entire season), this time the showrunner did not clue the actor into what he was seeing on the other side of the door. Smith was not on set the day the scene was filmed, so he can only postulate what direction Henderson received. Virgin River star Benjamin Hollingsworth talks Lark's betrayal, what's next for Brady "We didn't tell him what was in there, so it's a testament to his incredible talent that he was able to create many possible scenarios of what he was seeing on the other side of that door," Smith notes. "We had several takes, so perhaps the director was just like, 'You found a dead body, you found a Peloton.' I don't know. But he nailed what we were going for in that in terms of wanting to draw the audience in." Meet Mel's parents in Virgin River season 6 flashback photos One other thing — for those of you who have already made a murder board connecting Lark's (Elise Gatien) sudden exit, her daughter's paternity (psst, it's bad guy Jimmy), and Charmaine and Calvin's relationship, well, you can stop with the red string. When asked if the two finale moments might be connected, Smith says, "Good question, but no." However, Smith does have one bit of comfort to offer fans chomping at the bit for answers. This won't be a "Who shot Jack?" or even a Charmaine's pregnancy situation. "We start season 7 shortly thereafter," he teases of where the next season will pick up the story. "There won't be a time jump between 6 and 7, so you'll get the answer pretty quickly." Virgin River season 6 is streaming now on Netflix. Close
