TV Michael Cera and Chris Evans get animated (or whatever) in new Scott Pilgrim Takes Off trailer The stars of Edgar Wright's 2010 film Scott Pilgrim vs. the World will return in an upcoming Netflix show. By Clark Collis Clark Collis Senior Writer EW's editorial guidelines Published on October 15, 2023 01:40PM EDT Want to see something cool? Or, you know, whatever? Netflix has just released the trailer for Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, the upcoming animated show that reunites the cast from director Edgar Wright's beloved 2010 film Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. Based on Bryan Lee O'Malley's graphic novel series, the movie starred Michael Cera as the titular indie-rock bassist, Mary Elizabeth Winstead as courier Ramona Flowers, and Chris Evans, Mae Whitman, and Jason Schwartzman, among others, as the League of Evil Exes whom Scott must defeat. The stacked lineup also included Kieran Culkin, Brie Larson, Anna Kendrick, Ellen Wong, Brandon Routh, Alison Pill, Aubrey Plaza, and Satya Bhabha. 'Scott Pilgrim Takes Off'. NETFLIX O'Malley co-created the animated series with BenDavid Grabinski, and the pair promise it will offer a fresh spin on the Pilgrim saga. "I wrote this stuff almost 20 years ago," O'Malley recently told EW. "I couldn't go back and rewrite it word for word. I kept thinking, 'I have to tell the story of Scott Pilgrim in a world where the story of Scott Pilgrim has already been told and people know it.' I had to kind of splash a new coat of paint on it and f--- around with it." "It was very important to us to make a show that surpasses any expectations people have," added Grabinski, whose previous credits include writing and directing the 2021 comedy Happily, starring Joel McHale and Kerry Bishé. "To me, the idea of spending years on a project that is just beat for beat the same thing feels like a waste of time." So... do they have any hilarious Evans stories? "Actually, my hilarious Chris Evans story is that he was so f---ing prepared," Grabinski said of recording the Captain America star's vocal performance. "He showed up and he knew the script front and back. He had it just down… No offense to anybody else, but he was just a pro." Added O'Malley, "He was the most prepared easily." Scott Pilgrim Takes Off premieres Nov. 17 on Netflix. Watch the show's new trailer below.
