Kelsey Grammer says Frasier revival would focus on 'a different story'

Kelsey Grammer downplayed potential for an upcoming Frasier revival when press caught up with him last year, but he's bringing new 2019 energy to the project, it seems.

Appearing on The Late Late Show couch for Monday night's episode, the actor said he's talking with "a group of writers" to get this going.

"The first principle is that it is a different story, basically," he told host James Corden. "Same group of characters but in a different setting. Something has changed in their lives. Certainly John Mahoney died over a year ago and we would probably deal with that a little bit with dad being gone."

In the '90s sitcom about psychiatrist Frasier Crane (Grammer) returning to Seattle to reconnect with his family and start an advice show on the radio, Mahoney played Frasier's father, Martin. The actor died in February 2018 at the age of 77 after a short illness, 14 years after Frasier aired its finale in 2004.

Grammer calls the potential revival "the third act of Frasier rather than trying to pick it up, like Will & Grace did, right where they were."

"We're just exploring what that might be," he continued. "It could be [set] in Chicago — he left for Chicago before in the last episode of Frasier — and there seems to be some appetite for it."

When asked if Frasier would still be hosting that radio show, Grammer said, "He's passed the radio show. He might be an art dealer he might be a professor. We don't know yet."
