Parting is such sweet sorrow

It’s time to say “Good night, sweet prince” to Will on TNT.

The freshman drama chronicling the misadventures of a young Will Shakespeare and his contemporaries has been canceled, EW can confirm.

Created by Craig Pearce, the show told the story of a young Shakespeare, a newcomer in London and aspiring playwright, through the stylized lens of punk rock — its modern soundtrack butting up against its 16th-century setting.

The show, which premiered July 10, struggled in the ratings all season and failed to resonant with audiences. Though the show drew heavily on historical fact, it couldn’t manage to find its footing in a busy summer on the cable network, which also saw the debut of Claws.

The TNT drama isn’t the first Shakespeare-inspired television drama to find out that what lives must die — Will gets the axe only a few weeks after the Romeo and Juliet-inspired Shondaland show Still Star-Crossed was canceled after its ill-fated first season.
