Firefly reunion finds Nathan Fillion and Alan Tudyk step into their old roles

Firefly fans have been treated to many a mini (or sometimes full-scale) reunion over the years. But Monday’s impromptu reunion of series stars Nathan Fillion and Alan Tudyk will feel a little more familiar than usual.

Fillion, who played Captain Mal Reynolds on the beloved space show, shared a photograph of him and Tudyk on a motorboat on Facebook, noting in the caption that there’s “something so familiar” about the whole situation. The picture shows Tudyk taking helm of the boat at the wheel as Fillion stands behind him, hands on his hips as he gazes into the distance — a pose traditionally struck by captains.

As fans of the canceled FOX show know, Tudyk played Wash (or as he’s formally known, Hoban Washburne), the pilot of the spaceship the entire ragtag crew flew around on.

Firefly, which ran from 2002 to 2003, followed the adventures of the Mal and the rest of the crew of his small transport ship as they ventured into space and navigated the aftermath of an interplanetary civil war.

In the years since the Joss Whedon show was canceled and his continuation film Serenity was released, fans have been clamoring for its revival. However, during a panel at Long Beach Comic Con late last year, Fillion stated that while he felt the series was a “dream job,” he was happy with leaving the series with one season.

“It’s really hard to look at that kind of stuff and say, ‘Give me more, because it’s not enough,’” the actor explained. “Oh my God. It was everything. It was everything. How can everything not be enough?”
