TV Teen with autism is ready for love in first clip from Netflix's Atypical Keir Gilchrist and Jennifer Jason Leigh's new series premieres Aug. 11 By Oliver Gettell Oliver Gettell Senior news editor, EW.com EW's editorial guidelines Published on June 19, 2017 06:56PM EDT Netflix’s new series Atypical is looking to put a different spin on the coming-of-age comedy, but anyone who has experienced a moment (or more) of teenage anxiety can probably relate to the show’s protagonist. Premiering Aug. 11, Atypical stars Keir Gilchrist as Sam Gardner, a high school senior on the autism spectrum who decides it’s time to start dating, and Jennifer Jason Leigh as Elsa, his perhaps overprotective mom. In a first-look clip, Sam asserts that he’s ready to go outside his comfort zone. “Talking to girls makes me a little nervous,” he says, “but Julia [his therapist] says it’s good to do things that scare you.” Elsa doesn’t sound entirely convinced when she tells him, “Fear is also there for a biological reason: I mean, fight or flight, right?” But Sam stands his ground. “Mom, I’m getting older,” he says, “and at some point, I really, really hope that I get to see boobs.” Ayptical was created by Robia Rashid (The Goldbergs) and also stars Michael Rapaport, Brigette Lundy-Paine, and Amy Okuda.
