Anne Hathaway, who became a star after her performance in the lead role as teenager Mia Thermopolis in the 2001 hit and its 2004 sequel, is expected to reprise her role, though Disney has yet to set anything in Genovian stone with an official announcement, including whether Julie Andrews will reprise her role as Mia's regal grandmother and the former queen of Genovia, Clarisse. The new reigning monarch addressed the update on Instagram not too long after the announcement, complete with a signature track from the franchise: Myra's "Miracles Happen (When You Believe)." "The fairy tale continues," Hathaway captioned the post. The late Garry Marshall directed the first movie, which followed a San Francisco teen who learns she's heir apparent to the crown of the small European principality of Genovia. With help from a grandmother she hardly knows, she embarks on princess lessons. The film also starred Heather Matarazzo, Mandy Moore, Héctor Elizondo, Sandra Oh, and Robert Schwartzman.
