Suits creator talks potential reunion movie: 'That could be fun' (exclusive)

"It's not an insane notion for us to someday do that," showrunner Aaron Korsh says.

The case isn't totally closed for Suits.

While creator Aaron Korsh is about to launch his new spinoff Suits LA (premiering Feb. 23 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on NBC), he's also very open to the idea of returning to the original series with a follow-up reunion movie.

"I was very satisfied with the way Suits ended, and at some point we might do a Suits movie and that could be fun," Korsh tells Entertainment Weekly for our latest cover story. "It's more in the hypothetical or theoretical stages, so I wouldn't have many answers for you [now]. But it's not an insane notion for us to someday do that."

Starring Gabriel Macht as legal shark Harvey Specter and Patrick J. Adams as his con man protégé Mike Ross, Suits first premiered in 2011 and ran for nine seasons on USA Network. The series recently became one of the hottest things in pop culture in 2023 — four years after it ended — when it became available to stream on Netflix, and it smashed streaming records for months on end (Nielsen reported U.S. viewers watched 57.7 billion minutes in 2023) and suddenly became a global hit — bigger than it ever was during its original run.

Due to the Suits resurgence, creator Korsh developed Suits LA, a new spinoff set in the same universe starring Arrow alum Stephen Amell as former federal prosecutor turned entertainment lawyer Ted Black. "I wasn't able to finish saying what I wanted to say about the Suits universe, so this is meeting a whole new group of characters and exploring their dynamics and their passions and their fears and their hopes and their dreams," Korsh says. "It’s fun going back to the beginning of something again."

Since the original series began with Mike as a fraud, posing as a Harvard-educated lawyer to work under Harvey at top NYC firm, Korsh knew he needed to create a whole new story to launch a Suits spinoff. That's where Ted comes in — while he has a connection to the origins of Suits, he's hiding a whole different past from everyone around him that will be revealed throughout the first season via flashbacks.

"I didn't want to do a season 10 of Suits — I finished, for the most part, telling the story of the characters of the original Suits," Korsh says. "I am aware that fans on social media are basically [like], 'We don't care. We want you to make season 10 of Suits and bring our old fan-favorites back.' I understand that there's going to be a process for people to love these new characters, so I'm hoping that by the end of the first episode, people are like, 'Wow, this is its own thing, and it has huge potential, and we can't wait to see what they have in store for us for the season.'"

Even with those noble intentions, Korsh is still feeling the pressure as he prepares to debut a whole new Suits family to the fandom, including Ted's best friend, criminal lawyer Stuart Lane (The Walking Deads Josh McDermitt), and the firm's promising protegés and professional rivals, Rick Dodson (One Tree Hill alum Bryan Greenberg) and Erica Rollins (The L Word: Generation Q's Lex Scott Davis).

"I view it similarly to putting together a football team," Korsh says. "You have to have a great game plan. You have to draft the best players that you can. You have to work as hard as you can, and you have to hope that they gel together and in a way that they can win games."

Korsh believes he's written the best scripts for Suits LA and has cast the best people for the roles, so now he can only hope for the best. "I have to hope that they mesh and gel onscreen, which I believe they have, but audiences will find that out," he says. "You can't know. It was lightning in a bottle [on Suits], and I think this cast has the same makings of the same chemistry and the same skill. Over time, hopefully we'll get lightning in a bottle again."

During the Suits reunion panel at the ATX Festival in June, series star Adams first teased the idea of a follow-up movie. "I am a person of no power or authority, but obviously, there’s a Suits LA show that is being made," Adams said. "[A movie] is definitely something [Korsh] is interested in doing, in trying to get the band back together. It depends on a million things if that can happen, but is it possible? I think it is possible."

Suits also starred Gina TorresSarah RaffertyRick Hoffman, and Meghan Markle (before she married Prince Harrry and became the Duchess of Sussex). Adams and Rafferty are currently hosting SiriusXM's Sidebar: A Suits Watch Podcast, featuring the first time the two actors have watched the show on which they starred as Mike Ross and Donna Paulsen.
