Combs was arrested the evening of Sept. 16 in Manhattan. The charges are not immediately clear. United States Attorney Damian Williams said in a statement to EW, "Earlier this evening, federal agents arrested Sean Combs, based on a sealed indictment filed by the SDNY. Rebecca Sapp/WireImage Marc Agnifilo, an attorney for Combs, stated that "we are disappointed with the decision to pursue what we believe is an unjust prosecution of Mr. Combs by the U.S. Attorney’s Office." Agnifilo states that Combs has been "cooperative with this investigation and he voluntarily relocated to New York last week in anticipation of these charges." The string of accusations, litigation, and investigation into the rapper’s exploits began when his ex-girlfriend, singer Cassie Ventura, sued Combs for rape and physical abuse in November. Although she settled her case the next day, her public accusations inspired more plaintiffs to come forward with their own abuse allegations against Combs. The rapper has denied these allegations. In March, federal agents raided Combs’ homes in both Los Angeles and Miami in March as part of an investigation by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI). Combs criticized the move as a “gross overuse of military-level force” in a statement via his attorney the following day. A video of Combs physically assaulting Ventura resurfaced online in May, prompting the musician to apologize for his behavior. “I take full responsibility for my actions in that video,” Combs said in a video. “I’m disgusted. English’s attorney Ariel Mitchell-Kidd told TMZ that a criminal indictment against Combs may come “very soon.” NBC News reported that a federal grand jury in New York is hearing evidence from HSI’s investigation earlier this month. CNN reported that a source familiar with the case said investigators were carefully compiling evidence to build a “bulletproof” indictment in June.
