EW's editorial guidelines Published on October 31, 2024 06:33PM EDT Comments Black Widow reconstituting the Avengers Initiative is not the plot of the next big Marvel movie, but it is the plot of the latest political ad for the current Veep's presidential bid. Scarlett Johansson, one of the original Avengers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Black Widow agent Natasha Romanoff, reassembled some of her fellow costars in support of Vice President Kamala Harris ahead of Election Day on Nov. 5. Chris Evans (Captain America), Robert Downey, Jr. (Iron Man), Mark Ruffalo (Hulk), Danai Gurira (Okoye), Don Cheadle (War Machine), and Paul Bettany (Vision) band together on a video conference call to stump for the Democratic Party's candidate. "I think Kamala Harris needs a catchphrase," Downey chimes in, which sparks a comical brainstorm. Three pitch ideas related to their character: Evans offers, "I could do this all day"; Cheadle goes with, "Boom! You lookin' for this?!"; and Gurira pitches, "Kamala forever!" The Avengers cast reunite to dub movie in the Lakota language The playful bit continues with a joke about how Harris is "down with democracy." "I don't know if that sounds the way we want it to sound," Ruffalo quips. Johansson and Evans have retired from their Marvel roles, though the former still works behind the scenes as an executive producer. The others in the Harris video still pop up on big and small screens from time to time as their characters: Ruffalo in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, Cheadle in Secret Invasion and the forthcoming Armor Wars, Bettany in WandaVision and the forthcoming Vision Quest, and Gurira in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Downey is now making his comeback to the MCU, but in a very different role than Iron Man: Doctor Victor Von Doom, who will be the central Thanos-level supervillain of Avengers: Doomsday. In an interview with Vanity Fair, Johansson recalled texting her fellow Marvel alum on a group chat, "We’ve got a lot of powerful people on this thread, and it would be great to unite…in hopefully creating a bit of a viral moment for Kamala." Normally people trickle in, but immediately the group was super excited about it." Billy Eichner and Will Ferrell were two other celebrities looking to give Harris a viral moment. Ferrell joined Eichner in reconstituting Billy on the Street, in which the pair hit the ground running (literally) in New York City to ask strangers crucial questions, such as, "Would you have sex with a Trump voter?"
