Kumail Nanjiani loses Oscar nomination bet to Edgar Wright and must eat brussels sprouts

Kumail Nanjiani is about to eat a big bowl of crow — in the form of brussels sprouts.

The actor-comedian lost a bet with director-writer Edgar Wright (Baby Driver) when his film The Big Sick earned him and writing partner/wife Emily V. Gordon a Best Original Screenplay Oscar nomination.

Following the Oscar nominations announcement Tuesday morning, Wright tweeted out praise to his Baby Driver team, who earned nominations for editing, sound editing, and sound mixing. He also added a note about The Big Sick nomination, saying, “I told @kumailn that he and @emilyvgordon would get a best screenplay nomination and that if I was right, he had to eat a bowl of brussel sprouts.”

A few hours later Nanjiani proved to be a man of his word, re-tweeting Wright’s message and adding “Edgar loves brussel sprouts. I hate brussel sprouts. Tonight I will be eating a bowl of brussel sprouts and enjoying it for the first time.”

Wright’s Baby Driver garnered three nominations total, while Nanjiani and Gordon’s nod is the sole one for The Big Sick. Read the full list of nominees here.
