EW's editorial guidelines Published on October 17, 2023 01:51PM EDT Anne Hathaway has fully lost it — in the best way possible — in the chilling new trailer for her upcoming thriller Eileen. Adapted from Ottessa Moshfegh's 2015 novel of the same name, Eileen chronicles the budding relationship between a young prison worker (Jojo Rabbit's Thomasin McKenzie) and the facility's newest employee, Rebecca (Hathaway), a psychologist who upends the titular character's life in sinister ways. Rebecca wafts into Eileen's life through a dreamy cloud of cigarette haze, as the blonde-haired, chain-smoking bombshell works her way into the young woman's pysche. "You really think you're a normal person? I bet you have brilliant dreams," Rebecca tells Eileen, before prompting her to reveal her darkest secrets. "People are so ashamed of their desires. I have my own ideas," she continues. "You can never tell anyone, do you understand? Promise me." Things then take a wild turn for the pair, which involves guns, a passionate kiss shared between the ladies, lots and lots of screaming, and, uh, slamming bottles of wine against a wall. Some things are so twisted," Rebecca says at the end of the preview, after we see a shot of Eileen holding a cocked gun to her new friend's face. "The only way out's for someone to die." The film world-premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival in January, and earned stellar reviews for its direction and performances. EW's review out of the event deemed the film a "wild Hitchcockian noir." Eileen, also starring Shea Whigham, is in New York and Los Angeles theaters starting this Dec. 1 before expanding nationwide a week later on Dec. 8. Watch the new trailer above. Want more movie news?
