Wes Anderson returns with first Isle of Dogs trailer

Wes Anderson has unleashed the first trailer for Isle of Dogs, his new stop-motion animated movie about a boy in Japan searching for his lost his canine companion.

As the new footage shows, all the dogs in the city of Megasaki are exiled to a massive garbage dump called Trash Island, rechristened the Isle of Dogs. The young boy, Atari, then sets off on an epic adventure in search of his own dog, Spots, with the help of a pack of canine friends he meets along the way.

The film marks a return to stop-motion for Anderson, who earned high praise for such work in 2009’s Fantastic Mr. Fox.

Anderson confirmed in December that Isle of Dogs would mark his first film since 2014’s The Grand Budapest Hotel. The star-studded voice cast includes Bill Murray, Bryan Cranston, Tilda Swinton, Frances McDormand, Scarlett Johansson, Greta Gerwig, Jeff Goldblum, F. Murray Abraham, Harvey Keitel, Akira Ito, Akira Takayama, Koyu Rankin, Courtney B. Vance, Yoko Ono, and Edward Norton.

Anderson has said the film is inspired by the work of director Akira Kurosawa and classic stop-motion Christmas specials like Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.

Fox Searchlight will release Isle of Dogs on March 23. Watch the trailer above.
