Mel Gibson meets with Warner Bros. about potential DC collaboration

Mel Gibson may be bringing his vision to the DC movie universe. The Hacksaw Ridge and Apocalypto director has met with Warner Bros. about a potential collaboration on the studio’s franchise of interconnected superhero films, sources familiar with the project have confirmed to EW.

One possibility discussed would be for Gibson to take the reins on a sequel to Suicide Squad, although there has been no offer or commitment, and talks are still in the very early stages.

Gibson, who has recently garnered critical acclaim, strong box office returns, and awards recognition with Hacksaw Ridge, has been critical of DC movies in the past.

Speaking to Deadline Hollywood in September, he called Batman v Superman a “piece of s—” and added, “I’m not interested in the stuff. Do you know what the difference between real superheroes and comic book superheroes is? Real superheroes didn’t wear spandex. So I don’t know. Spandex must cost a lot.”

While Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad both had sizable box office hauls, reviews were mostly negative. Warner Bros. has also struggled with high turnover among its would-be DC directors, with Michelle MacLaren parting ways with Wonder Woman, Seth Grahame-Smith and Rick Famuyiwa both exiting The Flash, and Ben Affleck stepping down from The Batman.
