Wes Anderson officially announces new animated film Isle of Dogs

Wes Anderson is officially going to the dogs.

The filmmaker has confirmed that he’s beginning work on his next project, an animated film titled Isle of Dogs.

Anderson’s latest boasts a star-studded voice cast including Bill Murray, Bryan Cranston, Tilda Swinton, Frances McDormand, Scarlett Johansson, Greta Gerwig, Jeff Goldblum, F. Murray Abraham, Harvey Keitel, Akira Ito, Akira Takayama, Koyu Rankin, Courtney B. Vance, Yoko Ono, and Edward Norton (who appears in the announcement video alongside the filmmaker).

Production on the film will take place in England, Anderson said, and he also shared a sneak peek at Norton’s character, a dog named Rex.

Fox Searchlight, which has acquired worldwide rights to the film, said in an announcement Thursday that Isle of Dogs will take place in Japan and “follows a boy’s odyssey in search of his dog.”

Anderson is also offering fans a chance to be a part of the film. He’s teamed with Crowdrise to offer one winner a trip to London to tour the set and voice a dog character in the film (“barking, howling & whimpering may be required,” the fine print states). Those who wish to enter can do so by donating $10, and proceeds from the contest will support The Film Foundation, a non-profit founded by Martin Scorsese dedicated to protecting and preserving motion picture history.

This isn’t the first time Anderson has tackled an animated picture — he did so previously with 2009’s stop-motion Fantastic Mr. Fox. He was most recently in theaters with 2014’s The Grand Budapest Hotel.

Isle of Dogs is expected to be released in 2018. You can watch Anderson’s announcement video below.
