Michael Cera, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Danny DeVito are in the 2024 Emmy race... for Outstanding Commercial

What do Michael Cera, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Danny DeVito, and Robert De Niro all have in common? Unexpected 2024 Emmy nominations!

Don’t worry, you didn’t miss out on a star-studded drama that secretly brought the four actors together. The acclaimed thespians are each celebrating nods in the Outstanding Commercial category, for ads that they starred in during the 2023-2024 season.

Earlier this year, longtime friends and Twins costars Schwarzenegger and DeVito reunited for a State Farm Super Bowl commercial that saw the Terminator star struggling to say the company’s well-known slogan, "Like a good neighbor, State Farm is there." 

Everytime he delivered the line, he said "neighbah" instead of "neighbor," eventually leading DeVito to step in and save the day. For stealing the spotlight, Schwarzenegger branded him a "backstabbah.”

Meanwhile, Cera led a mildly disturbing CeraVe ad in which he promotes the moisturizer with such disconcerting lines as "human skin is my passion” and "let my cream hydrate you." He also creepily massages himself and tests out a villainous laugh to the tune of ominous music. 

Thankfully, there’s a twist: we zoom out of the commercial to discover that Cera is the one pitching himself as a spokesperson for the brand, and a room full of dermatologists are less than thrilled with his efforts.

“My name is Cera,” he tells his unconvinced audience. “So it’s the perfect crossover opportunity.”

As for De Niro, he teamed up with Sex Education star Asa Butterfield for an Uber One ad that sees the duo becoming besties as they use the app to share in their two favorite things: “eating food and going places.”

They play ping-pong, swing in the park, watch silly cat videos, and spend a lot of time commuting. The friendship is so true that at one point, the Killers of the Flower Moon star pulls a coin from behind Butterfield’s ear, revealing his secret passion for magic.

Other nominees in the category include two commercials from Apple (who won the award last year) and the “Just Joking” ad from Sandy Hook Promise, featuring such comedians as Wanda Sykes, Billy Eichner, and Margaret Cho.
