EW's editorial guidelines Published on January 12, 2024 06:00PM EST Warning: This post contains spoilers for Mean Girls. Let's be clear about something: the new Mean Girls musical movie includes almost all of the iconic lines from the original that fans could want, from "Get in, loser" and "On Wednesdays we wear pink" to "Stop trying to make fetch happen" and all things Glen Coco. But in updating the film for 2024 — and also having to make time for musical numbers — there are a few lines that ended up on the cutting room floor. "It's tricky because jokes have to be surprises to work," screenwriter Tina Fey previously told EW. "There's a little nostalgic dopamine that we get, but I learned doing the musical that if you want it to play as a joke, it's not going to play the same if it's just the same. So finding genuine new moments and then finding spots to subvert what you expect the old line to be was really helpful.” Rachel McAdams as Regina George; Reneé Rapp as Regina George. Paramount Pictures; Jojo Whilden/Paramount In other words: Every line didn't fit the new film. Here are the eight most noticeably absent lines from the original: "How many of you have ever felt personally victimized by Regina George?" Although the new film has the same gymnasium scene — and the same "raise your hand" exercise — this exact line isn't uttered. "Boo, you whore." By setting the film in 2024, the film lost the three-way calls that held so many good moments in the original. Most notably, what Regina (Rachel McAdams) says to Karen (Amanda Seyfried) when she lies and says she can't go out because she's — cough, cough — sick. "I have a fifth sense. It's like I have ESPN or something." Avantika's Karen has a number of great, very dumb quotes, but one thing that didn't translate from the original was the joke about her breasts being able to tell when it's...already raining. "But if you do touch each other, you will get chlamydia and die." In general, the new movie has less Coach Carr (this time played by Jon Hamm), but pretty much everything about his Sex Ed speech has been updated, including the absence of this line/threat. "Oh my god, Danny DeVito, I love your work!" In the 2004 film, Daniel Franzese's Damian shouts this when a young girl commands him to leave the girls' bathroom. Now, Jaquel Spivey's character simply gets one slightly confused look when he enters the bathroom. "I did not leave the South Side for this." This time around, when the students go wild and start attacking one another after the Burn Book reveal, Tim Meadows' Principal Duvall updates his line to say, "I did not go to graduate school for this!" "Is butter a carb?" Yes, Regina is still watching what she eats. No, she doesn't ask if butter is a carb. Yes, she still gets cheese fries. "Oh my god, Karen, you can't just ask people why they're white." Perhaps it's obvious why this Gretchen (Lacey Chabert) line didn't make the cut in the year 2024. Mean Girls is in theaters now.
