See Jonathan Groff transform into Bobby Darin in Just in Time exclusive first look

Somewhere, beyond the sea...

Bobby, baby...

Jonathan Groff is ready to take audiences somewhere "Beyond the Sea" as crooner Bobby Darin in new musical Just in Time, and Entertainment Weekly has your exclusive first look at the Tony winner transforming into Darin as he walks into a nightclub and grabs a mic.

Groff, who won a Tony Award earlier this year for his work in the critically acclaimed revival of Merrily We Roll Along, will both produce and star as the crooner in this new musical that will transform Broadway's Circle in the Square Theatre into an intimate and immersive nightclub.

The video features a denim-wearing Groff arriving to the theater on his bicycle (a regular occurrence as theater fans know). He goes through the stage door and emerges into a smoky nightclub wearing a suit and tie, as he passes a bar serving up champagne in couple glasses and cocktails galore.

The show will trace the life of Darin, "from soaring highs to crushing lows," as the show announcement puts it. Groff will be joined by a cast of 16, as well as a live on-stage big band, who will perform some of Darin's most beloved hits, including “Beyond the Sea,” “Splish Splash,” “Dream Lover,” and “Mack the Knife."

Based on an original concept by Ted Chapin, Just in Time will be developed and directed by Alex Timbers (Moulin Rouge!) with a book by Warren Leight (Side Man) and Isaac Oliver (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel).

"Bobby Darin was a supernova," Groff said in a statement. "He blazed his way through every corner of the entertainment industry, but his enormous talent, charisma, and pure genius were most on display when he was letting it rip in front of a crowd. This primal passionate love affair he had with the audience was the inspiration for our show's conceit. Alex Timber's distinctive ability to make going to the theater an unforgettable event and Bobby's signature musicality and explosive fleeting life make Broadway the perfect place to experience the story and essence of this once in a lifetime talent.”

Darin was one of the biggest musical stars of the 1950s and ’60s, beginning his career as a songwriter at the Brill Building where other greats, including Neil Diamond, got their start. He broke out with 1958's "Splish Splash," which he co-wrote. He then notched other hits with his song "Dream Lover" and covers of "Mack the Knife" and "Beyond the Sea."

"Bobby Darin worked across many genres of music, but he was most alive performing in intimate nightclubs,” director Alex Timbers said in a statement. "And so, it was vital to Jonathan and myself that we stage Just In Time at Circle in the Square. This is where we could build an environmental nightclub setting including a live, onstage big band that will allow the same sort of intimacy and electrifying audience connection that both Bobby and Jonathan are known for.”

Though his life was brief, Darin had a storied career and tumultuous personal life that included a highly publicized marriage to Hollywood sweetheart Sandra Dee. He released 27 albums spanning many musical genres, starred in 13 movies, and won two Grammys, as well as a Golden Globe for his acting debut in Come September. He died at the young age of 37 in 1973, while recovering from open heart surgery.

His life was previously chronicled in 2004 biopic Beyond the Sea.

Just in Time begins performances on March 28, 2025 before its opening night on April 23.
