EW's editorial guidelines Published on August 23, 2024 04:09PM EDT Jon Voight is urging former son-in-law Brad Pitt to "step up" and "end this nonsense" amid his contentious divorce from Angelina Jolie. Speaking with Fox News about his upcoming film Reagan about former U.S. President Ronald Reagan, the controversial actor weighed in on his daughter's ongoing legal battle with Pitt over their shared French winery Château Miraval. "I wish they'd find a way to make peace," said Voight, 85. "You know, I think the kids need some stability. I love the kids, and I love my daughter. And I want Brad to step up to do, you know, what he has to do. End this nonsense." Angelina Jolie asks Brad Pitt to 'stop the fighting' and drop winery lawsuit Jolie, 49, filed for divorce from Pitt, 60, in 2016 after two years of marriage and 12 years together overall. Though declared legally single in 2019, the pair's highly publicized divorce continues to drag on as they fight over division of assets and, previously, custody of their six children Shiloh, Pax, Vivienne, Knox, Maddox, and Zahara. Jolie currently maintains primary custody over their minor children, 16-year-old twins Vivienne and Knox. Jon Voight; Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. Dia Dipasupil/Getty; George Pimentel/Getty Stars and their famous fathers Pitt's lawsuit against Jolie in regards to the winery, in particular, has made the divorce all the more contentious. In Jolie's countersuit, her legal team alleged that Pitt was physically and emotionally abusive towards her and the children, citing an altercation on a plane in 2016 wherein Pitt allegedly “grabbed Jolie by the head and shook her” and "pushed her into a bathroom wall," and later "choked one of the children and struck another in the face” when they came to Jolie's defense. The FBI and child welfare authorities in Los Angeles opened and ultimately dropped an investigation into Pitt, who denied the allegations. Voight — who has become an outspoken conservative voice and supporter of Donald Trump in recent years, contrasting his more liberal views in earlier years — recently made headlines for criticizing his daughter over her stance on the Israel-Hamas conflict. Jolie, a longtime humanitarian who has worked with the United Nations, called for an "immediate ceasefire" in the ongoing conflict last year and condemned the bombing in Gaza. In response, Voight said his daughter has been "been exposed to propaganda" and "influenced by antisemitic people." He told Variety last month, "Angie has a connection to the U.N., and she's enjoyed speaking out for refugees, but these people are not refugees.... I love my daughter. I don’t want to fight with my daughter," Voight said, "but the fact is, I think she has been influenced by the U.N. From the beginning, it’s been awful with human rights. They call it human rights, but it’s just anti-Israel bashing."
