Drew Barrymore reveals how she overcame the 'shame' of divorce while dressed as Donny Osmond: 'I’m totally liberated'

Drew Barrymore is opening up about how she overcame feeling “shame” after divorce — and she’s doing it all while dressed as Donny Osmond. 

One week after she transformed herself into The Rock, Barrymore decided to step into Donny’s shoes — sporting his signature haircut and 1970s suit, as a cheeky way to welcome his sister, Marie Osmond, onto her talk show on Wednesday.

The actress continued to wear the sweet and innocent look into her Drew’s News segment, which saw the two Osmonds reflect on Jennifer Lopez’s music video for her song “Can’t Get Enough.”

The video, which incorporates footage from Lopez’s film This Is Me...Now: A Love Story, features the singer poking fun at her own marriage history by having her tie the knot multiple times while her wedding guests all remark about how she can’t “be alone” and make bets about how long it will last. 

Barrymore commended Lopez and shared how she, similarly, overcame the stigma surrounding divorce. “I had so much shame around divorce and, for some reason, something happened and I said, ‘I’m no longer willing to feel this way,’” she said. “And it just lifted from me.”

The actress — who was previously married to Jeremy Thomas, comedian Tom Green, and actor Will Kopelman — explained what caused a shift in her perspective. 

“I just thought, when you get a divorce, you’re saving the [most] precious commodity we have on this planet which is only our time,” she said. “And when you’re truly in a situation that isn’t functioning the way that, optimally, it hopes and wishes to be, we accept that and we improve our quality of life by moving forward.”

She continued, “Divorce now, to me, I don’t have shame around it. I’m totally liberated.”

Osmond chimed in to note that while she believes in “doing everything possible to make a marriage work,” she emphasized that both parties have to be willing to do the work. “I also believe that there are some divorces made in heaven,” she said. “In my situation, I divorced at 50 and I had eight children that I needed to support, take care of. I was basically the breadwinner.”

Although the “Paper Roses” singer did not specify which of her partners she was getting a divorce from on the show, Osmond was in her late 40s when she divorced her second husband, Michael Blosil, in 2007. She later remarried her first husband, Steve Craig, in 2011. 

“That’s when I lost 50 pounds,” Osmond said about her divorce, before jokingly adding, “And I tell everybody I actually lost 350 pounds!”

Barrymore ended the segment by showering Lopez with nothing but love and respect. “J.Lo, I love you, I really appreciate you again bringing empowerment to where most people go to shame,” she said. “We’ve all been in it. So go J.Lo!”
