TV Article Annie Award 2017: Zootopia, Kubo and the Two Strings lead nominations 'The Red Turtle' and Japan's 'Your Name.' also score major nods By Joey Nolfi Joey Nolfi Entertainment Weekly's Oscars expert, 'RuPaul's Drag Race' beat reporter, host of 'Quick Drag' Twitter Spaces, and cohost of 'EW's BINGE' podcast. Almost all of the drag content on this site is my fault (you're welcome). EW's editorial guidelines Published on November 28, 2016 04:58PM EST Photo: Disney; Laika Studios Nominations for the 44th Annie Awards – recognizing the best in animated filmmaking in television and movies across 36 categories – were announced by the International Animated Film Association on Monday morning, cementing the Oscar-bound trajectories of titles like Zootopia, Kubo and the Two Strings, and Finding Dory. Disney’s $1 billion worldwide-grosser Zootopia, which features the voices of Ginnifer Goodwin and Jason Bateman, leads the feature film nominees with 11 total nods, while Laika’s critically-lauded Kubo and the Two Strings follows close behind with 10. Kubo and Fox’s Kung Fu Panda 3 are the only non-Disney title to appear in the Annie Awards’ Best Animated Feature category, as remaining nominees Finding Dory and Moana also hail from the Mouse (via Pixar and Walt Disney Animation Studios, respectively). Moana, which broke a pre-Thanksgiving box office record last week, earns six total nominations, followed by The Red Turtle, which nabs five. Kung Fu Panda 3 and Trolls (also from Fox), tally four nominations apiece, while Finding Dory and My Life as a Zucchini take three. Disney/Pixar films typically dominate the awards conversation in their respective categories, though 2016 has amassed an impressive slate of big-budget studio animated titles and smaller international titles alike. Disney; Warner Bros. On the specialty front, the Best Animated Feature – Independent category, introduced last year, sees foreign titles such as The Red Turtle (which debuted at Cannes and traveled the fall festival circuit), Miss Hokusai, and Japan’s highest-grossing film of 2016, Your Name., the first anime feature outside of Studio Ghibli to gross more than $96 million at the Japanese box office. Last year, three of the Academy’s five Best Animated Feature nominees received Annie Award nods prior to Oscar placement: Shaun the Sheep Movie, Anomalisa, and Inside Out, which ultimately won both the Academy Award and the Annie. The Annies and the Oscars have awarded the same film in the category 10 times since 2001 – the year the Academy introduced its Best Animated Feature honor. At the 1992 Oscars, the Annies’ first Best Animated Feature winner, 1991’s Beauty and the Beast, became the first animated film in history to be nominated for Best Picture. The Annies often cross over with the Academy’s Best Animated Short category as well, as both Sanjay’s Super Team and World of Tomorrow were nominated by both awards bodies in 2015. Of the 10 animated shorts still in the running for Oscar consideration, Google Spotlight Stories’ Pearl, Pixar’s Piper (which screened ahead of Finding Dory in theaters), and the National Film Board of Canada’s Blind Vaysha received Annie nominations this morning. The 44th Annual Annie Awards will be held in Los Angeles on Feb. 4, 2017. Check out the full list of nominees (per the Annie Awards’ website) below.
