EW has learned exclusively the son of Beauty and the Beast’s infamous meathead is headed to Descendants 2: Newcomer Dylan Playfair will play Gaston’s son, Gil, in the sequel to Disney Channel’s massively popular original movie, Descendants. Playfair is an actor and hockey player from Fort St. James, BC, Canada, who’s scheduled to recur in the upcoming Netflix series Travelers and the Miranda Sings sitcom Haters Back Off, as well as an upcoming feature with the Vicious Brothers. He’s also served as a series regular on Some Assembly Required and Letterkenny. Gaston’s child isn’t the only new face joining the children of Maleficent, Jafar, Cruella de Vil, and the Evil Queen in the sequel. Descendants 2 will also introduce China Anne McClain as Uma, the daughter of Ursula, as well as Thomas Doherty as Harry, the progeny of Captain Hook. Descendants 2 begins production this summer ahead of a 2017 premiere and picks up following the seemingly happy ending for Mal (Dove Cameron) and King Ben (Mitchell Hope), which concluded with Mal’s green-eyed wink to the camera and the promise that the tale was not yet over. The sequel, according to Disney, “turns the page to reveal a whole new level of mystery and surprise.” Kenny Ortega returns as director, executive producer, and choreographer, with executive producer Wendy Japhet and a script by Sara Parriott and Josann McGibbon.
