Highest-paid authors of 2016 include J.K. Rowling, James Patterson

Some of the world’s most well-known authors have turned their words into millions, and now Forbes has released its list of the highest-paid authors of 2016, noting how the scribes stack up against one another.

James Patterson nabbed the top spot, marking his third consecutive year at the top of the list. His estimated $95 million in yearly earnings more than secured him the lead. Patterson’s sum is nearly five times that of the runner-up Jeff Kinney (Diary of a Wimpy Kid series), who brought in $19.5 million, about the same as third-placer J.K. Rowling.

Patterson’s staggering financial success is likely due to a number of recent and upcoming television and film adaptations of his books. He serves as an executive producer on the CBS series Zoo, adapted from his 2012 novel, and a film adaptation of his book Maximum Ride is due out on Digital HD August 30th.

Of course, adaptations have likely been the reason a number of other names made the list as well. Rowling’s Harry Potter most recently spawned the stage play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child and its script book, which sold 2 million copies within two days of its release.

The Top 5 are also rounded out by John Grisham ($18 million) and Stephen King ($15 million), while Game of Thrones scribe George R. R. Martin, Fifty Shades of Grey author EL James, and Divergent‘s Veronica Roth also appear on the list.

The only name new to this year’s list of authors is Paula Hawkins, who penned last year’s instant hit thriller The Girl on the Train, which is now a big screen release due out in October.
