'Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates': EW review

Image

Single brothers Mike (Adam Devine) and Dave (Zac Efron) are the life of the party, and also the death of it: a two-man wrecking crew blazing a trail of tequila-scorched mayhem through birthdays, anniversaries, and other sacred Stangle family gatherings. Worried the pair will torpedo baby sister Jeanie’s upcoming destination wedding too, their exasperated parents demand that they find dates to keep them in line, leading the hapless brothers to place a Craigslist ad—perhaps they are unaware of eHarmony?— seeking two “nice girls.” Enter Tatania (Aubrey Plaza) and Alice (Anna Kendrick), best friends with their own long list of misdemeanors; it takes about a hot minute for them to clean up, engineer a meet-cute, and aloha their way into the boys’ all-expenses-paid Hawaiian getaway. But sweetness is not in their DNA any more than impulse control is in Mike and Dave’s, and so the shenanigans we came for— or dread, depending on your tolerance for hard-R absurdity—commence. A better title for Dates, penned by the same team behind Neighbors, might be Wedding Smashers; there aren’t many slapstick or scatological places the script won’t go, and sometimes its frenzied lunacy just face-plants. But Efron and Devine are an endearingly loony duo, and as much as Plaza and Kendrick never quite sell their vixen shtick, the supporting cast is wickedly stacked. It’s like riding a roller coaster fueled by Red Bull and grain alcohol: kind of gross but pretty fun, too. B
