Casting Net: Kate Hudson follows Mark Wahlberg, Kurt Russell to 'Deepwater Horizon'

Kate Hudson in an oil rig film? It’s all happening. The actress joins Mark Wahlberg and Kurt Russell in the forthcoming Pete Berg-directed feature Deepwater Horizon, Summit Entertainment and Participant Media announced Thursday. She’ll play Felicia Williams, Deepwater Horizon oil rig engineer Mike Williams’ (Wahlberg) wife in the inspired-by-true-events picture. It’s slated to be released September 2016. [The Wrap]
Edgar Wright snaps up Cinderella for his new film. Lily James is in final talks to star opposite of Ansel Elgort in Baby Driver. In the new film by The World’s End director, Elgort is a budding getaway driver who works a failed heist for a crime boss, threatening his and the life of his love interest (James). Rob Corddry, Kal Penn, and Matt Barr all join William H. Macy‘s directorial project The Layover. It follows two young friends (Alexandra Daddario and Kate Upton) whose flight is redirected to St. Louis because of weather. Toby Stephens is getting off his 18th-century vessel and into Benghazi. The lead of the Starz series Black Sails has landed a big role in Michael Bay’s upcoming thriller 13 Hours. John Krasinski, James Badge Dale, Max Martini, and Pablo Schreiber are already attached to the retelling of the 2012 attacks in Libya. Stephens plays Glen “Bub” Doherty, a GRS officer friend of Krasinski’s character. Chuck Hogan adapted Mitchell Zuckoff’s book Thirteen Hours: A Firsthand Account of What Really Happened in Benghazi for film. [Variety]
Rebecca Hall and Michael C. Hall lead up Antonio Campos‘ drama Christine, based on a Florida newscaster (Rebecca Hall) who meticulously plans her suicide and ultimately shoots herself on camera. Michael C. Hall plays coworker George, who develops a crush on Christine. Maria Dizzia (Orange Is the New Black), Tracy Letts (Homeland), and J. Smith-Cameron (Rectify) costar in the project that’s been quietly in production for a few weeks. [The Wrap]
